Introduction
The internet protocols comprise of technical rules defining the way computers communicate via the network. The protocol fall under two versions: the IP version 6 (IPv6) and IP version 4. The first version is the IPv4 of the internet protocol that is common, and it accounts for various internet traffic used today. There are more than 4 billion addresses based on IPv4 today. Though these are a lot of IP addresses, they are not well positioned to last a lifetime. There are a few numbering systems that are on IPv6 that provide a much larger address more than the IPv4 pool and has other features. IPV6 has 340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,456 addresses (ARIN, n.d.). It was in 1999 as a means of meeting the IP addressing needs in the world and to address the future needs. This essay discusses how my employer has been impacted by migrating to IPv6. It will also discuss the cost and time estimates in the formation of NIST and whether IPv6 is worth the effort.

Migration to IPv6

By migrating to IPv6, the organization now can extend its IP addresses from 32 bits to 128 bits. It also means ...

The IPv6 also provides the organization with an integrated mobility and security capabilities. It simplifies managing of the IP addresses. It enhances the routing and processing of data packets. Since shifting to IPv6, my employer has not managed to the community with organizations that still use the IPv4. It is because IPv6 and IPv4 are not interoperable. Initially, the company tried to make do with APv4 by using ports rather than internet address. However, the company realized that it was a complex activity to its business network and eventually it had to upgrade (NTIA, 2015).

Also, the organization was forced to implement both the IPv6 and SDN because they require major changes in network design approach. Transitioning to IPv6 means that the company is enjoying both their benefits. They are flexible, scalable and much easier in establishing service-oriented and persistent overlays. IPv6 enables the SDN in simplifying its virtualization of the various infrastructure of the IT such as storage, computation and network. IPv6 also enables the conservation of the bandwidth through enabling a multicast. The multicast allows the flow of packets to be sent simultaneously to some destination addresses. It also enables assigning of addresses, packet processing and efficiency in the management of the system.

Implementing both the IPv6 and SDN also meant minimizing performance and downtime issues resulting from the network infrastructure changes. The transition to IPv6 also meant that the organization managed to refresh its IT infrastructure and came up with a framework for its next generation (Economist, 2006).

Time and cost estimates made by NIST

The internet experts and industry stakeholders agree that networks based on IPv6 are in many ways more superior than the IPv4 networks. The header infrastructure redesigning of IPv6 as well as its enhanced capabilities and a new flow of labels in new protocol sufficiently provide significant security outcomes. It is a benefit to the network administers, internet users and applications developers. There are, however, disagreements on the on the timing and characteristics of the potential security benefits of IPv6.

The timing of the transitioning from IPv4 to IPv6 for any existing network infrastructure and adapter, IT could dramatically have an impact on the realized benefits and costs. Labor resources do account for the main bulk of transition costs linked to IPv6. Additional physical resources may also be required such as increasing the memory capacity for message forwarding hardware and routers (Cisco, 2007).

Based on the relationships between timing and cost, it is most likely that the IPv6 penetration will be a gradual process and may never reach the 100percenet of users and applications the timing events are sequential. Within the ISPs, for they enable their network capable software and hardware availability. The curve is a key penetration metrics in detraining cost analysis since it captures the time of expenditure. The IPv6 capabilities that is when users and ISPs have a capable Infrastructure for IPV6 applications and components in place but not enabled is not a vital component for determining the cost timing for groups. It is because of the increasing variable costs of IPv6 associated with the R&D applications and those that enable the functionality of IPv6.

The combination of the costs distribution surrounding the timing and enabling the system results in the distributional timing approach is for calculating the transition cost series. The timing of Major U.S IPv6 adoption in the United States is very speculative (Cisco Skills, n.d.).

Is IPv6 worth

Since the addresses for IPV4 are running out, then IPV6 which can support trillions and trillions of IP addresses is worth the effort. Since no one will be buying new addresses for IPv4, and then the IPv6 advent is pressing. Businesses, however, seem to be unaware of the issues involving the migration from IP v4 to IPv6 (IBM Support Portal, 2015).

As the world heads towards the network and intelligent devices, every step is IPv6 worth the effort (DHCP IPv6 configuration, n.d.). There much to be done in, but project teams and managers from across organizations need to consider making this switch. The shift will help them minimize the costs and pain and ensure their businesses perform successfully. It is because the IP v6 has much better performance than the IPv4. Organizations also need to shift because of security matters. During the transition, there will need to reconfigure the business network firewall. It is because when the firewall is left open it becomes susceptible to a breach. The IPv6 is designed to improve communication in all devices. It ensures the compatibility of the entire patching software and network infrastructure.

Also when organizations shift to the use of IPv6 they can communicate with other organizations around the world via email. Thus, organizations need to realize that their demand for the IPv6 needs. Though the switch to IPV6 is not an easy task since it will affect many areas of the organization’s processes, the shift will be worth the effort. Areas that can be affected include applications for payroll. Email and supply chain management. In this shift, there is a need to consider the need to configure the whole network infrastructure starting from the initial deployment.

The best influence from the two protocols in terms of performance, quantifiable and configurations indicate that the best influences from each of them is the requirement of adhering to HIPAA, Sarbanes-Oxley, and other extra governance. The protocols also have to provide compliance and risk reportage as well as auditing requirement. Many publicly traded organizations start to consider their networks as an essential aspect of their transitions. They also need to embrace new approaches on collaborating with suppliers, workers, and commercial partners. Thus, the most pervasive protocol is the IPv6. It is because of the security element of IPv6.
Conclusion
NTIA calls upon organizations and stakeholders to address the current technology and communication issues. One way of addressing these issues involves the deployment and adoption of Protocol version six (IPv6). It has the benefits of expanding the IP addresses number. The shift of organizations in adopting IPv6 is critical for the growth of the Internet.
