I have not experienced a similar situation in my life, but I have heard of people who what found themselves in such ethical dilemmas. It is challenging to make certain decisions considering that each has consequences. For instance, the decision to give a true account of Dr. J’s medical condition would affect the friendship between them and probably create animosity that Dr. M did not assist Dr. J to be considered for the insurance coverage. On the contrary, Dr. M. would risk his job as a physician of the insurance company and trust bestowed upon him by giving false details about the health condition of Dr. J. It would also attract legal liabilities from the Insurance Company after realizing that Dr. M gave false details. Many of the physicians I have heard claiming that they were in similar situations overcame by doing the right thing as required by their professional code of conduct, but others compromised for their peril.
Values are the basis for particular behavior and motivation to do a particular task. They are abstract and dynamic concepts that describe what individuals seek to achieve. However, being abstractive, values may mean different among groups of people. It is necessary to have criteria for defining values and giving specific meaning to them since an individual’s idea of a particular value may be different from another person’s idea on the same value. I think that values should not be different for different situations since values should be based on performing the right thing at all times. The decisions made by a health care practitioner should be based on ethical guidelines as well as a professional code of conduct, hence considered as values in healthcare which are acceptable by all the major players in the healthcare sector. Situations should not compromise values since they are bound to change based on the condition of a patient, but values remain the same in all situations. It is unnecessary to favor an individual based on a friendship basis and violate the ethical values in place.
