The Prince And Qualities Of A Good Leader

Introduction
Machiavelli was a florentine politician who retired from public service for him to write on the required skills for successfully running the state. He was concerned with the abstract reflections on how things should be and hence decided to focus on the way things are. He used practical cues and examples from the historical record and argued that social benefits of stability can be attained amidst moral corruption. He wrote ‘the prince’ in 1513 and dedicated it to lorenzo de’ medici, and it has practical advice on how a city can be ruled (machiavelli, 669). The important quality of leadership is not similar to what other ethical philosophers have described in virtuous character. The crucial leadership qualities identified in work include practicability in consideration of the personality, character, and conduct of a ruler; good reputation, one who is feared and not loved, having good advisors, acknowledging the likelihood of failure, and acting boldly rather than assessing every possible eventuality. As such, the greatest world leader for the 21st century is one who focuses on the day-to-day practical aspects of life, has a good approval, and has the right support system.

According to machiavellian, good leaders should be feared than loved since one cannot be both to avoid a revolt. Every prince desires to be considered merciful and not cruel. He cited gesare borgia who was termed as cruel but brought order to romagna by uniting it and restoring peace and obedience ((machiavelli, 672). As such, leaders ought not to consider about reproach of cruelty to maintain unity and loyalty from his/her subjects. It appears that leaders who are feared are more likely to give better guidance than those who are loved since it helps him to make certain decisions with finality. From a primary research interview (march 30, 2017), maria vega asserted that a great leader ought to have strong moral belief. Such persons cannot be persuaded to change their minds easily. Every feared leader is likely to have a strong moral and not easily persuaded to change their stance on certain issues.

Great leaders should consider their personality, character, and conduct. Machiavellian explains that a prince should learn to keep his word, which is a strong demonstration of integrity. He claimed that it is impossible for a leader to have all the conventional virtues that include trustworthiness and liberality, but should appear as if they have them. He gives examples of acting like a man and a beast at the same time where man fights using laws and the beast uses force (machiavelli, 675). It is evident that a leader cannot be good at all times, but should learn to exhibit some qualities of using laws and also force based on the authenticity of matter since dishonesty is discouraged of a leader. I feel that a great leader ought to be ready to defend their actions through demonstration of great personality, and character without much emphasis on whether others term it as acceptable or not.
