Introduction
The fact nurses are the foundational basis of any healthcare system cannot be disputed; especially considering that the work they do is not only multifaceted but also very complex. However, that has been a nursing shortage seen all over the world with adverse impacts on the delivery of care around the world. According to Jones, (2017), the term nursing shortage is used to describe the overreaching imbalance of demand and supply associated with qualifications, demographics, accessibility and the willingness to do the work. It, however, follows that when the available number of nurses is not adequate to offer high-quality health care, the term used is the shortage of nurses.
Snavely, (2016), asserts that in the year 2012, the bureau of labor and statics presented results projecting that there would be growth in employment between 2010 and 2020. The report further indicates that the projected need for nurses would rise from 2,737,400 to 3,548,300, which implies a 26% increase (Snavely, (2016). The increase according to the Bureau of Statistics would be fueled by the growing baby boomer population. The recent rise in the citizens of the baby boomer population that is turning 65 years at the rate of 10,000 individuals daily leads to the conclusion that the 79 million people comprising this population have amplified the needs for nurses (Snavely, 2016). These nurses are considered vital in addressing the health needs that will be demanded by this population.
Cox, Willis & Coustasse (2014), argues that the turnover, in this case, is considered to refer to an employee’s movement from their state of being employed in the current position voluntarily and additionally leave the organization. The prevalent increase in the nurse turnover is associated with the avoidable turnover, which is a resultant of an organization’s inability to retain the employee in the organization. The challenge is considered to be at the rate of 64% in comparison to the unavoidable turnover of 36% due to issues as marriage, pregnancy among other life events (Cox, Willis & Coustasse, 2014).
Several factors have been put forward in explaining the reasons that account for the nursing turnover as well as the lack available skilled nurses in the US. MacLean, et al. (2014) believe that some of these factors include the increase in age; dissatisfaction with the job, insufficient staffing, patient demographic changes, and control of the supervisors has been a major contributing factor to the increase in the problem evident in the healthcare industry. The high rates of nursing turnover have been a major challenge for the players in the healthcare industry, leading to increasing in expenses as well as draining financial assets for the open positions in the facility. More than 80% of the overall expenses in the facilities come from the vacancy within the staff along with the lost productivity by the organization through the cover duties of missing the employees (Snavely, 2016).
According to Abhicharttibutra, et al., (2017), t is evident that the issue of nursing shortage has been endemic in the United States of America, with the fact being that some parts of the country are more seriously affected than others. The prevailing anticipation further worsens the situation that the situation is only going to get worse with time. By taking into consideration that adverse impact that the shortage has had in the US hospitals and the entire healthcare system, nurses and the other health care stakeholders have voiced their concerns to the policy makers in the central government for immediate remediation. The prevailing assertion is that the current nursing shortage is worse than any other experienced in the past (Young, Acord, Schuler & Hansen, 2014).
According to May, (2017), in Florida, the looming shortage of nurses has led to the questions on the severity the problem is going to reach, an issue that has been a major concern among the healthcare leaders as well as the stakeholders in the healthcare industry. In Florida, the unfilled number of nurses has increased by more than 30% between the year 2013 and 2015 to reach levels of 12,500 according to the statistics of Florida’s school of nursing, with most of these vacancies being on the hospitals (May 2017).
Retirement is an additional issue characterizing the staffing challenges faced by hospitals in the region, with the assertion being that by 2013, one in every five Americans is going to be a senior citizen. There already an increase in the population of Americans who are above the age of 65 years and older.
