How Ngos Are Supporting The Senior Citizens Living In Old Age Homes
Total Articles: 70
According to a 2016 report by the Ministry for Statistics and Programme Implementation, India has 103.9 million elderly people aged 60 or above who further contribute to the 8.5 per cent of the total population of the country. The needs of the aged population remain unfulfilled because of the lack of financial resources and a proper source of income. Apart from this, nowadays, senior citizens are also not getting the love, respect and the attention they deserve from their own family members, and such conditions are making matters worse for old people.
To tackle the problem, NGOs (Non-governmental organisation) are working towards issues faced by old age people including age discrimination, abuse, gender inequality, race, poor economic conditions and health. Non-Profit Organisations also ensure that old age citizens live happily, actively and have a dignified life. Let’s read through some of the benefits NGOs provide to old age homes:
Building Up Senior Citizen Homes
NGOs provide shelter for senior citizens who are sick, stranded by family and are suffering from disasters. These old age homes also provide special medical facilities which include mobile healthcare systems, ambulances, nurses, and provision of well-balanced meals. Also, apart from the basic amenities, some senior citizen homes also provide programmes such as yoga sessions where people can indulge in a physical activity and also interact with others. Citizens can also use the telephone and other means of communication inside the shelters to connect with their family members.
Providing Educational and Recreational Centres
Senior Citizen Homes also have the provision of educational centres where one can use libraries for reading books and periodicals of their choice. Moreover, senior citizens are also recommended to complete their education from open universities, libraries, cultural bodies, and research institutions.
They also allow recreational activities which are senior centric. The activities may include painting classes, music classes, pottery classes and other programmes. Recreational centres also include fitness clubs, parks, yoga classes, spiritual sessions and food festivals.
Helps Old Age People Emotionally and Economically
NGOs receive donations through fundraising, events, and other people. The donations can be used to support old age people emotionally and economically as the NGOs provide regular medicines, help in maintaining a proper diet and eating habits, and offers recreational, cultural, and social activities for the old age people. Old age homes also organise regular healthcare campaigns where senior citizens can get their full body check-ups done. Moreover, old age people also receive the care and attention they were not getting in their homes which helps in making them emotionally stronger.
Improving Status of Senior Citizens in the Country
Senior Citizen Health Care is the topmost priority of NGOs. Many NGOs help old age homes in organising free healthcare campaigns which prove to be helpful in diagnosing the physical as well as the mental condition of aged people. NGOs also help in improving the status of senior citizens by providing healthcare, medical services and welfare for elders. Non-profit organisations use technology for empowering the senior citizens which can be used further for leading an active and healthy life.
