Many People In Dorset Need Care In The Home – And Not Just The Elderly
Total Articles: 4
If there is one thing that is certain about home care in Dorset it is that there is no such thing as one size fits all. The care that older people may need is as varied as the people themselves. It is not just older people who may need care, either. Some people who are much younger suffer from physical disabilities which can be birth defects or perhaps the result of a car accident or serious illness. Other people may have mental health problems, but the one thing that they all have in common is that they need some form of extra care.
However, this is very often over and above what their families can provide, if indeed they have any family. Some older people have very few family members left and may also have lost many friends, leaving them isolated in their homes. Many suffer considerable loneliness and don't see anyone from one week to the next. Even if these people are still physically fit and able to look after themselves, they may benefit considerably from just having someone call in on a regular basis for a cup of tea and a chat.
Of course, physical problems can be many. As we get into old age, parts of our bodies can simply wear out after years of use in the same way that anything which gets used over and over can wear out. Many people suffer from arthritis caused by wear of the cartilage between the joints such as knees, hips, and especially the lower back. This can make it difficult to climb stairs and even make it difficult to stand up from a sitting position in a chair.
It can also cause quite a considerable amount of pain which can result in it being difficult to cook a meal. This is as a result of simply not being able to stand for any length of time at the cooker, or not being able to bend down and put things in the oven. It can also affect being able to get in and out of the bath, or even get up off the toilet. Some people are unable to dress themselves.
It can be the case that some people are perfectly capable of looking after themselves in their home, albeit they may be in some pain carrying out certain functions, but have difficulty walking. They may need a walking frame in order to get about, or they could need a mobility scooter in order to get to the shops to buy food and other essentials. Still others may not be able to get out at all and need someone to get their shopping for them.
There may be other people who can look after themselves but would like to visit their sister every week, or even just go to bingo or to a club in the village hall, but need help in getting there. Some people with a large home and garden may be able to care for themselves, but not the garden so need someone to mow the lawn and tend the flower beds.
While some older people are happy to go into a care home, there is no doubt that the majority of older folk would like to remain in their own homes and their own surroundings. After all, they have much more space than a room in a care home, and a communal lounge where they may not be able to watch the TV programmes that they like because the majority want to watch Coronation Street – or not watch Coronation Street, as the case may be.
In order to help people who want to remain in their familiar surroundings, care and support delivery in Dorset is as varied as those who need it. It may mean daily visits to help someone bath and dress, together with another visit in the evening to help them undress and go to bed, or it could just be popping in once a week for a tea and a chat with someone who is physically fit, but just lonely. Whatever is needed, there are care providers who can deliver the support needed as and when it is required.
You-Cas is a small company offering care and support delivery in Dorset. They offer whatever support is needed so that people can live out their lives in their own homes.
