Home delivery meals have over the last few years become big business in many areas of Australian and the major cities in The Western World. It has made it more convenient for many people to have wholesome, healthy meals at home as they do not have to fight traffic congestion and wait in crowded restaurants and queues. Unfortunately, this type of service comes with some inherent problems for all the parties involved, the consumer and those that prepare and supply as well as those that deliver the meals.

One major challenge has been the logistical

- Developing, implementing and maintaining a complex system that is able to accept online orders, organise and pass them to the kitchens to prepare and cook, then have them delivered in a reasonable time, in perfect condition can be expensive.

This has successfully been done with pizza delivery, but becomes more complicated with a larger menu and add-on’s.

The do it your self-option could work for a very local operation that restricts itself to a limited clientele in a given area. Otherwise, the logistics of maintaining and keeping track of each and every delivery person and order become more than most businesses could support.

Third party delivery is the most common option but this means that you lose from 20 to 35% of the sales value resulting in minimal profits so higher prices to customers resulting in diminished orders.

- Time equals money so the best option is a having a good workforce management system in place.
- It is so important that the food arrives at the correct destination on time and perishables need to be either hot or chilled in good condition as the customer demands.

It is necessary to use the following methods to ensure customer satisfaction

- Have a properly hygienic food warehouse on wheels that can deliver the right food at the right time to the right people
- To use the correct types of containers to hold the food
- Be able to keep the food at the correct temperature whether hot or chilled
- Have a system where those delivering the food are earning a reasonable wage so keep staff and encourage quality of service
- Many areas of the industry have been underpaid using contract rates and this is set to change as the food delivery industry is expected to be worth about $2.5 billion by 2025

The bigger the home delivery service grows the competitive advantage many kitchens are experiencing will decrease and soon it is expected that people will get deliveries from their local kitchens. This would reduce travel expenses and overall expenses, re-establishing the value of restaurant dining and having healthy home delivered meals again.
