HTTPS is a standard feature of all websites but with the increase in cybercrimes and attacks it is paramount that the site administrators have an SSL certificate for all issued by a registered SSL certificate authority. A rollout of Google Chrome 62 emphasises website security amidst a host of other new features. It has included a warning for all sites that flags all user data that is without an SSL certificate will be considered as not secure. This is done in an attempt to decrease cyber-attacks.

About SSL certificate

Simply put, an SSL certificate is a security technology that is used to create an encrypted link. This link is between the browser and the web server. Without the SSL certificate it is not possible to establish a secure connection. Moreover, there is a high chance that the personal information will be compromised. All sites that has an SSL certificate will have an additional ‘S’ in the browser rather than HTTP. According to a report and requirement of Google, more than 81% sites on Chrome are laden over HTTPS. That means most of the sites are secured and are under SSL Certificate Service and usually cannot be hacked.

Data becomes unreadable

Using an SSL certificate your personal data cannot be leaked as in any unsecure connection. Hackers cannot read the information regarding your credit card, its numbers, the username and password. Your shared data can be only readable to server you are sending the information to. Apart from that, when you have an SSL certificate your credibility as a website owner is further boosted. All potential clients and customers can now rest assured that all their personal information will be in safe hands.
Relevance of SSL certificate

If you are wondering whether an SSL certificate is relevant to you then you must first consider the working principle, requirements and purpose of your website first. If your site takes in any user text input in the forms of login panels, contact forms, search bars, or is an e-Commerce store and whether your website on HTTP, you will need an SSL certificate. It will enable you to avoid being flagged with the “not secure” warning. You can contact SSL Certificate Providers to get an SSL certificate. Few may even offer a one-click SSL option. There are plenty of certificate authorities out there but you should choose the best one form them.

Types of certificates

There are a few features to look for to choose the best SSL certificate provider. First you will need to know what you want and then look for the certificate authority that has it. Next you will need to choose the types of SSL certificates that you need. You may need a Domain Validation certificate for domain legitimacy, Wildcard to root domain and sub-domains, Extended Validation for distinguishable green coloured address bar, Unified Communications for encrypting the connection with email and other software for communication, Subject Alternative Name to link root domain and related domains or Organization Validation for legal identity.

Which to choose

The SSL certificate that you will need will depend on your site. Ideally a Domain Validation and Wildcard certificate is required by all Word Press site, and an Extended and organization Validation is required by all e-Commerce and organization sites. On the other hand Unified Communications certificate is required for email servers, Subject Alternative Name is required when you have multiple related domains that are not necessarily sub-domains but can include IP addresses, URL or DNS name.
