Aurora is a large suburban city that is located just outside of Denver, Colorado. Reported to be the third most populous city in the state of Colorado, it is vibrant and growing community. Traditionally, most people in the area viewed Aurora as simply a suburban extension of Denver; however, as the town grew to be one of the fastest-growing communities in the 1970s and 1980s, it soon laid claim to the status of an independent city. Because of its suburban nature, Aurora doesn't have a historically important central business district; however, what it lacks in traditional commerce, the city certainly makes up for with its sense of community and charming character. Many visitors come to Aurora to see friends and family so it's appropriate that the five top must-see places are those that you can enjoy with the whole family.

1. Aurora Fox Arts Center
The Fox Arts Center in Aurora is one of the city's historic landmarks. Located in the East End Arts' District at 990 East Colfax, the center has a 245-seat performing arts facility coupled with an adjoining rehearsal and scenery shop. It was originally built in 1945 as ...
... a movie theatre. Forty years later, it was completely renovated and in 1985, it reopened as the official home for the Aurora Fox Children's Theatre Company and the Aurora Fox Theatre Company. The theatre is known for its top quality performances, both by the local theatre groups and visiting artists. The genres and types of artistic performances are wide and varied, offering superb entertainment to all of Aurora's ethnic communities. When planning a visit to Aurora, look up current performances and treat yourself and the family to a great evening out.

2. Aurora Sports Park
Many visitors to Aurora are sportsmen and women from nearby communities playing various league matches at the Aurora Sports Park. The 220-acre sports park has 23 soccer fields and 12 full-sized baseball and softball fields. In addition, there are five concession areas with restrooms, four playgrounds and seven picnic shelters, four within complexes and another three within the park areas. The Sports Park's address is 18601 E. Sports Park Drive which is approximately one-half mile east of Tower Road if you're driving from Colfax Avenue. Maps can be obtained from the local info office or by searching online.

3. Delaney Farm Historic District
For those visitors who have an interest n the region's history and culture, a visit to the Delaney Farm Historic District is a must. The area was landmarked in 1997 and covers 160 acres of wide open space dotted with historic homes and sites. Originally, the land was owned by the Delaney family, hence its name. Dairy cattle and horses were raised together with a variety of other livestock. Today, you can visit the beautifully restored farm buildings and take a journey back in time to the early pioneering days. The Gully Homestead, believed to be Aurora's oldest surviving home, was relocated to the Delaney Farm Historic District in 1982. A historic landmark on its own, the Gully Homestead is a small ranch house that was originally located on Mississippi and Chambers Roads in Aurora. It was built around 1870 and was the home to an Irish immigrant family who raised cattle and horses.

4. Plains Conservation Center
The 1,100-acre site in Aurora is part of a greater Plains Conservation Area in Colorado. The second site is located at West Bijou Creek, south of Strasburg. Together, the two sites cover a wilderness area of 8,894 acres. The Plains Conservation Center in Aurora is a state-designed natural area and outdoor education and conservation facility. The Front Range Building houses a nature center with live animals, a resource library and many interesting displays. The Historic Wells Farm consists of two replicated farm homes, a school house, a barn and a blacksmith shop. The farm provides great insight into early pioneer life on the prairie. There are also four Cheyenne tipis with replicated historic artifacts from the 1830s at the Cheyenne Camp. The Plains Conservation Center has picnic facilities and is a great place to explore with the family.

5. Aurora History Museum
This community-based museum offers a wide variety of exhibits throughout the year. Showcasing not only historic artifacts, the museum includes exhibits of both old and new cultural aspects which attract a wide range of interests. Interesting private collections are displayed from time to time in the collectors' corners and include items such as music boxes, rare crockery items and other historic artifacts. In the gallery, various artists are exhibited and shows range from modern photography to oil and watercolor paintings. Workshops, talks and events take place on a regular basis and details of the program can be obtained from the museum info desk.
