Do large corporations hire freelancers online? Yes, they do. But why would they do that if they already have skillful, knowledgeable and experienced manpower at their disposal? It is ironical, isn’t it?
While it’s a tradition of start-ups and small organizations to hire freelancers online, perhaps because of resource constraints and tight budgets, large organizations, which have no problem accessing resources, gladly hire freelancers online. This trend has been going on for a while, and it seems, it isn’t going to end – at least in the foreseeable future.
But why on earth would a large corporation seek a talent outside its usual pool of talents who have a long-term attachment to it? What is it about contractors that attracts big businesses to outsource some of their functions to freelancers?

From time to time, large businesses downsize their workforce to operate leanly – time-efficiently and cost-effectively. There are several reasons for downsizing, and technology could be the main reason. This isn’t to say that the corporation is doing badly financially. Nope.
In fact, it’s quite the opposite. It’s so ironical that big businesses make astronomical profits yet the size of their workforce keeps on contracting. It isn’t something that one would not have anticipated a decade ago when the world was undergoing difficult financial times. Fast forward to today, a lot has changed – for the better, apparently.
Freelancers and contractors are their ideal kind of workers – people whom have no long-term attachment to the organization, and ones whom can’t unionize against their bosses, nor would they demand salary increments and benefits such as insurance, whose costs the employer has to cover.
For organizations that want to maximize profit, it isn’t surprising to see why big businesses are turning to hire freelancers online. The company’s dealings with the freelancer ends once the contract expires – there’s little commitment on the part of the company. It’s up to the freelancer or contractor to take care of their welfare during the course of the project – not the company. Fortunately, organizations are willing to pay a premium for specific skills.
To Avoid Paying Benefits
For a profit-maximizing and cost-cutting organization, employee benefits are like a thorn in the flesh. And unionization and labor laws have only served to antagonize organizations against workers. This is a fact that many organizations are quick to deny, but, the fact that they’re increasingly looking to hire freelancers online is a vindication of the fact. Given that healthcare costs have skyrocketed beyond the roof in some countries, it’s understandable that organizations are reluctant to foot healthcare insurance bills of workers.
For a freelancer or a contractor, organizations don’t have to meet the costs, and neither do freelancers expect them to do that. As freelancing is increasingly embraced as a way of working, it’d be interesting to see whether laws would require employers to provide benefits to freelancers.
To Find a Freelancer who Cares About the Company
This isn’t to say that long-term employees don’t care. In fact, some do, but when someone isn’t doing their best for the organization, it shouldn’t surprising that corporations hire freelancers online. Some employees have a habit of meeting the minimum requirements to avoid being sent packing by the company. And that’s just that – they don’t go over and beyond to exceed the expectations of their bosses. For a freelancer, such a mind-set is potentially disastrous.
If you don’t do your best to meet and exceed the expectations of your employer, someone else can do that. Your room for errors ranges from little to none – excellence separates a successful freelancer from a mediocre. Employers simply don’t rehire you. A better paid freelancer is most likely to deliver better results than a regular employee.
To Find Talent on a Basis of Merit
The hiring (or firing) behavior of organizations has caused problems with merit. A best-performing employee expects a promotion or reward. It turns out that’s not always the case. This is one of the chief reasons why organizations lose top talent to freelancing and competitors who appreciate or reward top performers.
Unionization can make it difficult for companies to focus on merit and performance as reasons for promotion. Therefore, organizations turn to hire freelancers online, because merit is automatic. Employers hire freelancers online based on their past performance, client satisfaction levels or favorable client reviews – not on whether they have more experience and degrees.
Freelancing is Here to Stay
Increasingly, freelancing is a work style but it remains widely misunderstood. As a way to cut costs and maximize profits, big businesses are finding it more attractive to hire workers on a contract basis. This isn’t surprising given today’s business operation environment – costly, competitive, fast-paced and disruptive. Freelancers remain attractive options for businesses, and the trend to hire freelancers online is going to continue for a long time.
