Ecommerce Is Expanding Rapidly In The 21st Century

Ecommerce is simply an abbreviation for electronic commerce which in turn is a broad term for selling anything on the internet. More and more people are buying online including people who wouldn’t have considered it only a couple of years ago, preferring to go to the high street. In fact, last year some 24% of all sales in the UK were made online, and that figure is set to grow.
When you have companies such as Amazon, why bother getting in the car, driving to a shopping mall, finding somewhere to park, trudging round the shops, making purchases, taking them back to the car, and then fighting your way through the rush hour traffic (if you timed it wrong)? It’s just so much easier to click a few buttons, and your Amazon purchase can be on your doorstep tomorrow morning.
What’s more, on a website such as Amazon you get a huge choice of products, where your local store can only stock what fits on the shelves. They are very often – but not always – cheaper too, because an online store doesn’t have to pay high street rents and rates, but locates its’ warehouses in cheaper areas. It also doesn’t have to pay sales staff to stand about in a store even when there are no customers. The staff it does pay process orders which have already been placed and paid for, so there’s no waste there either.
None of these comments are intended to promote Amazon: there are many other online stores. Amazon is just the best known and biggest. However, you can build your own ecommerce store using much the same processes as Amazon.
The steps involved are fairly simple from the shopper’s point of view. He or she lands on the website and enters a search term. Products are then shown and the shopper can add them to a cart and create an account if he does not already have one. He then clicks to check out and the website should show a lock symbol showing it is secure. He then enters his credit card number which is passed to a payment gateway such as PayPal or Worldpay, or may elect to use something like PayPal direct instead of a card if he has an account there. The order is now complete, and all the online store has to do is to deliver the purchase.
Your Own Ecommerce Store
You can set up your own online ecommerce store, but you will need the services of a company that specialises in ecommerce web development unless you are very tech savvy. Obviously, you need to have the ability to accept credit cards, and for security reasons the payment doesn’t process through your website but a payment gateway. This means that you need an account with a payment gateway, but your ecommerce web development team can show you how to do this. However, although the payment passes through a payment gateway the customer will not be aware of it and will not be directed away from your website. Your website will be secured with 128 bit encryption using an SSL certificate which makes fraud virtually impossible. When the purchase has been completed the money will be transferred into your account.
Once the order has been placed, the customer’s details will be visible in your admin section so that you can complete it. You simply login to see the details. From here you can also do many other things with your ecommerce website such as adding more products, deleting ones which don’t sell well, change prices, add special offers, and a whole lot more.
Ecommerce web design is something that you do need professional help with. You need a website which is easy to navigate, looks great, persuades customers to buy, loads fast, and more, and this is not something that you can do yourself unless you have spent several years designing and building ecommerce websites. Certainly, it costs money to set up an ecommerce website the right way, but that is because there is a lot of work involved. However, once up and running you have a business which is open 24/7/365 and will make you sales while you sleep.
