Windows and doors when well maintained can last you for a long time. Doors and windows are important parts of your house. They add to the appearance of your house and are the most exposed part of the house. They have to undergo varying weather conditions as well as the effects of the surroundings.
Taking care of windows and doors increases their life and also helps you save money on replacement and repair.
Most of the doors and windows installed these days are of timber and aluminium. Timber has been a traditional preferred choice and has been around for a long time. Aluminium doors prices are affordable with respect to the longevity and functionality they provide and many modern properties feature them. Both of these materials need different maintenance measures and you need to take care of it.
The internal care for timber is easy. You will have to remove dust from the frames and sash every four to six months. It depends on the location of the area and if there is more dust coming in, then keep your windows closed and clean accordingly. You can also attach a window mesh or screen to trap the dust and prevent the entry of bugs.
Places which are more likely to trap grease and dust such as garage, pantry, and kitchen will need to be cleaned more often. The best way is to inspect the doors and windows timely and make note of any issues you notice.
The external care of timber will need you to check any splits and cracks on the framework. The doors and windows that are more exposed to sunlight will need more care as the paint coat cracks after a point of time. Paint provides protective coating to timber and in its absence; the wood will begin to crack.
Moisture has a negative effect on wood. Hence, you should be careful about the amount of moisture. It should be somewhere between 2% to 15% and the temperature should be 10-20 degree celsius. (Get a hygrometer.)
The hardware such as the hinge and the handle also need looking after. A 2D or 3D hinge needs lubrication for proper functioning. You can put a few drops of acid-free oil to keep them moving. Door handles such as a double tung handle will also need to be oiled. You can do it three to four times a year.
The gliding tracks of sliding windows and doors will have to be cleaned every now and then as dust settles in them quickly. It is important for the functionality of your aluminium windows and doors.
Aluminium doors do not require a lot of maintenance measure due to their exceptional toughness and durability. They are resistant to rust and UV rays and hence are best for exposed areas of the house. Clean the glass with soap water and do the same for the aluminium frames.
No matter what the material of the door is, with timely maintenance it can last you for years. Hence, keep an eye for your doors and windows and doors next time you clean your house.
