Since its inception in 1938, the Samsung Group has maintained its anti-union position. Founder Li Bingzhe has declared that the union will be allowed to "beyond my body." But South Korea's largest corporate group is showing signs of change as it faces public pressure to realign its relationships with workers.

The company’s apparent union destruction activity has become a focus of attention this year as state prosecutors investigate allegations that Samsung’s destruction of organized labor and the destruction of union activities violated the law.

Although not an official policy, Samsung publicly expressed its dislike of the union and believed that they "created unnecessary conflicts."

Because Samsung Electronics Service, a technology giant's repair subsidiary, has promised to transfer about 8,000 contract workers to ordinary employees and recognize 1,000 unions in April, it has drawn people's attention.

“This is the first time the group has officially recognized the union and promised to guarantee its activities,” said Ra Doo-shik, head of the Samsung Electronics Services Contract Workers Union. "This is a major achievement for us."

Some analysts believe that due to the lack of a radical labor culture, Samsung has become a rapid growth of global technology giants, and pointed out that other Korean business groups such as Hyundai Motor have to deal with frequent worker disputes.

Only 9 of Samsung's nearly 60 units have unions, and less than 300 of Samsung's 200,000 domestic workers are unionized – well below the national average of 10%.

According to union members, at Hyundai Motor, 74% of the 68,000 workers are unions.

Another sign of change is that Samsung officially agreed last week to accept the final decision of the arbitration panel, which will be adopted by early October at the latest to resolve the 10-year legal confrontation with chip factory workers who said they have leukemia and other illnesses. A serious illness caused by exposure to toxic chemicals.

Samsung Electronics denied any causal relationship, but agreed to accept the mediator's advice, which is expected to include a formal apology, new compensation for the victim, and measures to prevent recurrence.

Union members believe that these changes were caused by the prosecutor’s investigation. The prosecutor raided Samsung’s electronics headquarters three times this year and obtained thousands of pages of documents, allegedly showing that the company’s guidelines hindered the establishment of unions. s hard work.

Labor activists and other analysts said that despite the official support statement, Samsung is still working behind the scenes to undermine the formation of the union.

"Samsung may want to improve its image before Lee's ruling. Park Sang-in, professor of industrial policy at Seoul National University, said that the impact of this change will remain to be seen.

The company said it allowed legal union activities and it cooperated fully with the investigation. “We respect laws and principles and legally guarantee workers to establish trade unions and activities,” it said.

Samsung is trying to fix the reputation of the corruption scandal that has entangled the group's billionaire heirs - apparently Li Zhengyong, who is awaiting a ruling by the Supreme Court on bribery charges later this year.

Park Yoo-kyung, a governance consultant at APG Asset Management, said, "This seems to be the beginning of the Samsung revolution, because managers finally feel the need to meet social expectations."
