Making a graphic design portfolio before the internet was a very time consuming thing. Today, with all the modern apps and technologies anyone can come up with a stunning portfolio very quickly, so the trick is to do something to get noticed. To have an original, worthy, relevant and useful idea, whether is on a digital platform, an app, computer, video or any other experience you can give people that solves a problem.

This is not that easy, but the following tips will help you create an awesome graphic portfolio from your ideas:

- Start by going through all your own created work and only include the things you’re proud of and are really your own. People generally have short attention spans and on the web will not stay unless intrigued and interested in your graphic design studio.

- You do not have to include everything just do some research and see the type of things the people who will review your portfolio, are interested in. Do not make them work to see your best, place it first. By only having a few projects shown well and the option to view more you will get more credibility.

- Don’t follow a standard WordPress or another standard website theme you need a new fresh approach, so look for or create something off the bat and different. You need the “WOW factor with people thinking your creations are cool and interesting from your graphic design studio.

- Include a variety of design forms, but ensure they all “flow together” even if they are different, they need to look like they are from you. This is your branding so be cohesive and allow the reader’s eyes to flow over each piece not jump around.

- Always go for Quality, not Quantity, remember a viewer will click through only a few projects to get a feel for your work and style, do not overwhelm them, “Wow” them.

- An online portfolio is important, but do not neglect to make a physical one as well as it will impress when doing an in person interview because many people neglect this necessary courtesy. If you are able, make it a real work of art in itself. Impressing the client is the name of the game here so they will hire you.

- Always go high resolution, even if you are doing it all online, they may ask for a print or sample to show or consider.

- Only include your new creations or update some older designs as technology, techniques and trends can change quickly.

- If you do not have any paid client projects that are suitable for adding to your portfolio to attract the client you are seeking, make up several samples of what you can do.

- Include the client notes on how you solved your client’s problems and the results. If there are designs that your client did not pick, but you like, include them.


These simple but important steps will help you define your portfolio. The main points are to place your best designs that highlight the work that is relative to the person viewing your portfolio in an eye pleasing arrangement Once you are finished have someone give it a critical review like the graphic design studio on the Gold Coast.
