Is There A Difference Between Power And Vinyasa Yoga?

If you are new to yoga, it is very natural for you to feel a little confused between different yoga forms. Although there are some people who use the terms ‘vinyasa’ and ‘power yoga’ interchangeably, there are subtle differences between the two. Before delving deep into the differences, let's first understand what vinyasa and power yoga is.

Vinyasa yoga-

Vinyasa yoga is also referred to as flow. It first began as ashtanga vinyasa yoga, which was introduced by Sri Tirumala Krishnamacharya, a popular Yogi. Now, what is ashtanga? Ashtanga translates into eight limbs. Ashtanga is fast paced and according to some people, it is an intense form of yoga. Under ashtanga yoga, you practice certain poses in an order and make sure this order never breaks. Vinyasa yoga is, basically, breath synchronised yoga, where poses are done keeping the breath in mind. Just like ashtanga, even vinyasa focuses on moving from one pose to another, but the movement is often slow and smooth. And because the transition from one pose to another happens smoothly, it is often referred to as flow or vinyasa flow.

Power yoga-

Power yoga also takes inspiration from ashtanga yoga. It came into being in 1990s, when Yogis felt that ashtanga yoga needed to be designed in a way that it became more accessible to western practitioners. It is also sometimes called gym yoga as it is extremely intense and is an absolute favourite among gym goers and western athletes. It is not like vinyasa yoga and poses are seldom performed in an order. Power yoga classes are necessarily heated.

The main differences between power and vinyasa yoga-

The first and most important thing to keep in mind is the fact that in power yoga, there are fewer poses and the practitioner has to hold them for a longer period of time. On the other hand, when you practice vinyasa flow yoga, you generally have to do more number of poses and you will have to move through them in a steady flow but quickly.

The second important aspect to look at is flexibility/ strength. Since poses are held longer in power yoga, it tends to build your strength over time. But by practising vinyasa yoga on a regular basis, you will gain more flexibility than strength. After all, the focus here is on linking one pose to another and trying to maintain a continuous movement.
