Adults know just how painful and uncomfortable a toothache is. And when it happens to a child, it is a whole different story. As parents, we would always want the pain to go away as soon as possible and make the child understand why it is happening. However, this is not always an easy thing to do. It is a good thing that pediatric doctors are always happy to relieve toothache pain, but sometimes they are not always readily available. To help you out, here are some of the top reasons for toothache among children.

Tooth Decay – Perhaps the top cause of tooth pain, tooth decay from range from a small dental cavity to an advanced stage of decay. Once the enamel is penetrated, pain will take place because the sensitive nerve endings lie just beneath the enamel.

Bruxism – Brixism is the clenching or grinding of the teeth, and can lead to toothaches. This condition wears the teeth down by the excessive force placed on them. Bruxism can also lead to jaw pain, as well as cracked or chipped teeth.

Tooth Abscess - Cavities that go untreated for an extended period of time can cause the decay to find its way down to the root of the tooth. When this happens, an infection can happen that can cause some throbbing pain. This is the reason why toothache has to be checked immediately before it gets worse.

Gum Disease – Aside from causing pain in the gums, gum disease can cause pain in the teeth as well. As gum disease advances, any swelling in the gum tissue can start to damage the bones of the jaw and teeth, which causes the weakening and pain.

Cracked Tooth Syndrome – Hidden fractures or cracks in the teeth can lead to toothaches on teeth that otherwise seems healthy. Referred to as cracked tooth syndrome, this condition can be a result of bruxism, traumatic tooth injury or an improper bite.

The best way to prevent toothaches and any dental problems is to maintain oral hygiene. This includes brushing the teeth two times a day for two minutes at a time using a fluorinated toothpaste. It is also important to floss and use antibacterial mouthwash every day, and to visit your dentist twice a year for dental exam and professional cleaning. If your child is suffering from tooth pain, contact a reputable pediatric dentist in your area now. Ask them about toothache and how to handle it when it happens to your child.
