While marble and granite countertops are almost similar, they do have some differences as well. Honestly speaking they are both beautiful and require some care. Both marble and granite have become the most obvious choice when it comes to countertops. They add an aesthetic appeal to your home. Knowing the marble countertop pros and cons is also important to judge the quality. Same applies for granite countertops as well. Let us look at the two types of stones in detail-

Marble Countertops-

Marble is also known as metamorphosed limestone. It consists of carbonate material which forms as a result of high temperature and pressure. The stone passes through the metamorphosis stage and crystallizes to form calcite crystals which leads to a change in rock texture. The crystals become even larger in size with time. Among all the natural stones available, marble is the most elegant one. The versatility of marble is also quite high as it is used for multiple purposes such as furnishings, flooring, bathrooms, kitchens, countertops, fireplace etc. These also come in a variety of colors such as milky white, red, black etc. Since, it consists of calcite crystals; these are usually prone to stains especially from liquids which are acidic in nature.

What is granite?

Granite is formed as a result of magma which has crystallized under the earth’s surface. Granite is also highly versatile as these are used to make products such as floor tiles, pavers, cemetery monuments etc. This is usually available in light colors. It is coarse and grained in nature and finds use in both indoor as well as outdoor applications.

Now let us look at the differences between the two-

Marble v/s granite countertops-

• Durability and hardness-

If we compare the two, Granite is usually harder and hence stronger than marble. Moreover, it is also heat resistant and is perfect for countertops as you can even keep very hot utensils on it, without any worries. While marble can become dull over time, this is not the case with granite. The stains are also quite difficult to remove from marble surfaces.

• Reaction to acidic substance-

While both of them are porous, it is marble which is more acidic in nature. Hence, the spills can easily leave stains on marble surfaces. Moreover, the acidic substances such as wines and fruit juices are even more dangerous. Granite, on the other hand is tougher towards stains. A sealant can help considerably in maintaining both, marble as well as granite countertops.

• Appearance-

Mable is usually available in light, dark or a combination of colors with veins running through its surface. Granite, on the other hand has meddled stones such as mica, feldspar or amphibole.

• Application-

While granite is suitable for areas such as hallways and kitchen countertops with high footfall, marble is most preferred in areas with less traffic, for example bathrooms. Marble looks elegant in the sense that it appears brighter.

• Cost-

Both of these stones are quite heavy and require professional help for their installation. While the cost of both is somewhat the same, marble tends to be more expensive than high-end granite. The cost also depends upon a number of factors such as complexity of the job, the quality of the stone and the style of the tiles.

• Maintenance-

While both of them require sealants in order to avoid stains, the frequency of application is higher in marble. Marble requires sealing at least twice a year and granite can go well with sealing every alternative year. Sealing also depends upon frequency of cleaning.

At Renowaze, we believe in providing you best granite and marble countertops which look amazing for years to come.
