Going On A First Date

Hi, I’m Jennifer, and I’m going on a date for the first time ever.

Me- short, pudgy, goofy, lazy, with no dress sense and a pathetically short list of interests and hobbies, will be meeting a guy for drinks and dinner for the first time in my life.

Am I excited?

Of course!!!!

I’m so thrilled that I’m actually trying to contain my excitement, and since one cannot be dancing around the flat like some freaked out queen the entire afternoon, I’m shutting myself in my room with my cat, my laptop, my mug of Ovaltine and my phone where I’ve told everyone on my Facebook friend list, and their friends of friends, what’s on my mind.

They’ve been incredibly helpful, my girlfriends.

I posted “I’m going on a date!!!!” three hours ago and ‘loves’ and ‘likes’ have been flooding in, plus a whole bunch of comments that range from “have fun!’ to “show pic! Show pic!” to “so exciting!!!!!!!!”

I guess most of them find it unbelievable that an EVENT like this is taking place to plain ol’ Jennifer.

Honestly, Jennifer herself is also pretty stunned that she is actually, really, truly, going on a real date.

And with a guy who has never been in her circles before and whom she will be meeting for the first time.

That’s two firsts, actually.

It’s a milestone. It’s a success story for someone like Jennifer. Because, if you saw me and if you knew me, you’d soon figure out that Jennifer isn’t the type to go out and make new friends, much less go on blind dates (double included!) or even do the online dating thing.

It was my mother’s constant nagging that did it.

You can have a stable career, your hobbies, and a good social network with your girlfriends BUT there is always the Mother, who ropes in the Father and the Elder Sister, who bugs you nonstop on finding a boyfriend, getting married, having a baby, and will you please grow up and lower your expectations because those guys in dramas don’t’ exist in real life.

So I downloaded a couple of online dating apps.

The swiping was a lot of fun. Right, left, right left. The likes were also a great deal of fun, especially when I posted pictures of ordinary random stuff like trees and street cats and my breakfasts and dinners, but what really caught my eye was this particular app #sclubber which, besides the chatting and messaging, gave me the option of

Seeing pictures and videos that other people had put up. This guy I’m meeting tonight not only loves evergreen music like I do, I managed to gather from his videos and pictures that he loves fishing, reading crime fiction and fantasy fiction and anime. And he also cosplays!
Knowing where we’re going for drinks and dinner. We decided we’d go dutch for our first date- yeah I’m independent like that- so we got these redemption coupons from the wine bar and the Japanese restaurant where we’re going to have our dinner tonight and we’ve agreed to split the bill thereafter.
But my absolute favorite?

The fashion category in the all-girl dressing room.

Oh gawd, I never knew I needed something like this until I needed it. They’ve got plenty of tips in there. Fashion tips, makeup tips, skincare suggestions, perfume tips and even footwear tips. There’re suggestions for every date imaginable.

For someone like me, someone who hasn’t thought she can actually work to prettify herself until she expanded her dating horizons, this dressing room is a savior. I studied the suggestions, asked around my girlfriends for any further suggestions, and I’ve got my pre-date plans all down pat.

So tonight I’m going to be a dark blue jersey dress that reaches to my knees. I’m matching it with my favorite pair of nude pumps. I’ve got my small crossbody bag ready. My nails are a shimmer pink, my lipstick is a shade of rose pink matte, my hair is washed and dried and I bought my girly perfume this morning.

I’m going to do the mask now.
Wish me all the best!
