When the country was called Lanka- The first name that was given to the country was Lanka, simply because ‘Lanka’ means ‘island’. The name has some mentioning in the mythological books that are of religious importance. The name was also used in ‘Ramayana’, in which the king Ravana steals the wife of Lord Rama. There are couples of other names that are similar to the name ‘Lanka’ like Lankadeepa and Lakdiva.

Tambapanni- The word ‘tamba’ means copper in Sanskrit and when the Prince Vijaya stepped on the Putalam beach in the 5th century, he noticed the sand was of copper color following which he was inspired and called the island ‘Tambapanni’. His kingdom was the first kingdom and the beginning of the Sinhalese kings. The country was famously known as the ‘kingdom of tambapanni’.

Taprobane- The name Tambapanni was misinterpreted by the ancient Greeks as Taprobane in the 4th century B.C.E. The name was used later in the modern European Era as well along with making appearance in the Portuguese National Poem.

Serendib- One of the most memorable names of Sri Lanka is ‘Serendib’. The term was coined by the Persians and Arabs. The Serendib is a transformation of ‘Sidhaleepa’, a name Indians used for a long time for the island which means ‘the dwelling place of lion`s island’. The name Serendib also inspired Horace Walpole who coined the term “Serendipity”. Let the word ‘serendipity’ inspire the traveler within you. Ceylon- Celiao in Portuguese, Selon in French and Selan in Spanish, the Arabic word ‘saheelan’ got plenty of interpretations and variations in the history. Sri Lanka- After the island became an independent country and a fully-fledged republic in 1972; it was given a new name by taking the ancient name ‘Lanka’ and prefixing ‘Sri’ which means resplendent.
