Nhai Plans Four-lane Highway In Telangana Under Bharatmala

The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) with financial aid from the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways MoRTH launched the cluster initiative, Bharatmala Pariyojna, to bring all regions in India into the fold of one arterial road network and boost freight and passenger movement.

The umbrella initiative subsumes several other undertakings including the National Highways Development Project (NHDP), with an estimated project cost of Rs 5.4 trillion to build 34,800 km of roads, of which Phase 1 alone includes projects worth Rs 3.5 trillion (24,800 km).

The government intends to award the projects under Phase 1 over the next two years and get them completed over the next five years. The preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for projects that involve the construction of 9,000 km of highways is already initiated. Of this 9,000 km, 188.5 km of two national highways will go through the southern State of Telangana and connect it to the States of Karnataka and Maharashtra, and has been sanctioned for construction.

Around 39.98 km of the four-lane national highway (NH161), from the Kandi region in the Sangareddy district to the Ramsanpalle region in the Medak district, has been awarded to GKC Project Ltd under the Hybrid Annuity Model and costs around Rs 1,201.62 crores to construct.

Another 46.6 km of the NH161, from Ramsanpalle to a region in Karnataka, has been awarded to KNR Constructions Pvt Ltd under the EPC model and costs around Rs 1,220.83 crores.

The construction of the next portion of the four-lane highway begins with 52.6 km of NH363, from the Repallewada region in the Adilabad district to the Telangana-Maharashtra border, and costs around Rs 988.47 crores, and it also has been awarded to GKC Projects Ltd under the EPC model.

The highway construction of the final leg of the project begins with the 48.96 km stretch of NH161, from Mangalore village to the Telangana-Maharashtra Border, and has been awarded to Dilip Builcon under the Hybrid Annuity Model. It costs around Rs 1,082.65 crores.

The total estimate of the project comes to Rs 4,493.57 crores.
