Most homeowners are aware of the typical question to be asked while hiring top construction companies in NYC. Things such as how long the contractor is in the business, references, testimonials, insurance, and information regarding the warranties are some of the most common questions most contractors face while they are looking for an appointment. Little things can make huge differences. Which is why you should always choose a general contractor very carefully. It is really important to hire someone who knows his job.

First of all, let's look at some of the common things one should do in order to hire a reputed general contractor.

· Consider getting a written estimate from the general contractors you are looking to hire. Remember that the cheaper option is not always the best option. There has to be a reason why they are cheaper. Ask for the explanation about any discrepancies regarding the estimate of the contractor.

· Look to get a detailed plan of work from the contractor in writing. The written description should include things such as the materials the contractor is going to use and also the deadline for the said work.

· There are some sales techniques top construction companies in NYC use in order to generate sales such as a price estimate. Do not fall for these sales techniques as it will not help you to get the service of a reputed general contractor.

· You should always look to confirm the location of the contractor's physical office. That is why it is important to get the business card of the contractor and visit the address written on it.

· Experience should get counted as one of the most important factors while choosing a contractor. Look to find out how long the company is in the business. An experienced general contractor will not look to trick you to get the contract.

· If your general contractor is asking you to pay the whole money in advance then you should not do it. Most of the reliable general contractors will not ask for advance more than 1/3 of the estimated price of the work.

· See the contractor's business license, credentials, worker's compensation insurance, general liability insurances, and manufacturer's warranties. By ensuring the contractor is licensed and insured, you will take all your risk factors away.

· Talk with the previous clients of the general contractor you are looking to hire. Asking for testimonials will not always give you a true indication of the quality of their work. No contractor will produce negative testimonials from their previous clients. That is why it is important that you talk to their previous clients in person or over the phone to find out about the quality of their work. Also, you can do a thorough market research on the general contractor in order to be absolutely sure that you are hiring the right person for the job.

Do not rush into choosing a contractor because apart from these aforementioned things, there are some other factors you should consider which are equally important while choosing top construction companies in NYC.

· Contractors often work on various projects at a time. So, it is quite important to make sure that you can count on the consistency in who comes to work on your home each day. To make sure, you can ask the following question:

Will the same team be working on my project each day?
What will the project manager specifically oversee each day?
Do you work with the subcontractor? If yes then what have you done to properly qualify them and are they covered by your liability and worker's compensation insurance?
How often will the business owner (the contractor himself) check on the progress of my project?
· It is very much important to know what to expect on the construction days for both the homeowners and the contractors, even if you are not intending to stay at home while the work is being done. You should ask these following questions to your contractor:

What are the approximate start and end times of the construction days?
Do I need to remove the items that are in or near the working area?
What will be the level of the noise?
Do you need me to be home at any point in time during the day?
You should also provide some key information to your contractor before the start of your project such as:

Ø The parking situation in your locality

Ø Which restrooms are available for use if there is any

Ø Where available power outlets are located

Ø Who (if anyone) will be at the home during the work (including pets)

Thus, if you keep these aforementioned things in mind then it definitely will help you to get the service of a reputed general contractor.
