Total Articles: 1
Homework are the tasks assigned by the teacher to gauge the skills of students as well as it is a little effort to make busy students with studies at home. Homework is an Assignment Help ancient education practice that, until recently, has infrequently been interrogated. Is there any need to assign homework or not? How much it is give, if it is necessary. How frequently homework will be given to the students.
When I am going to assign any task for home to my students of grade 10, they become faint and reluctant not to give homework. There are many factors, which contributes in the reluctant behavior of students. Firstly, school timing; after school, they reach their homes round four O’ clock in a fade condition. After taking lunch they take a nap, during this whole activity daytime has been finished. Then they also spend some time in playing what they like. That is why; they are showing unwilling behavior for homework.
However, some time it is necessary to keep child in touch with studies, homework are essential. Question is that in a day or a week how much homework will assign.
Arrogance's toward homework have traditionally mirrored social inclinations and the fundamental educational attitude of the time. Homework is consider a cause of nervous conditions in children, eyestrain, anxiety, lack of sleep, and other conditions. The role of homework in the view of students is as a culprit that deprived children of vital prospects for social communication. Child labor laws use as an excuse to guard children from excessive homework.
Professor Harris Cooper 2006, establish proof of a constructive relationship between homework and student achievement, meaning students who did homework achieved better position in school. The National PTA and National Education Association support the "ten-minute homework rule," which acclaims ten minutes of homework per grade level, per night (ten minutes for first grade, 20 minutes for second grade, and so on, up to two hours for 12th grade) (Cooper, 2010).
Homework may have positive and negative impact on students’ learning. Homework benefits in terms to boost cognitive skills, observation skills and learning skills.
• Purpose of homework
The foremost task of teachers are to explain the purpose of the homework. Is homework really make sense or I just gives to complete the class incomplete task? In book “Effective homework practices” author proposed four purpose of homework; pre-learning, inspection for understanding, practice and processing.
Pre-learning: The purpose of pre-learning is to get the information regarding the topic that teacher will introduce next day. If student has prior knowledge, about any topic, they are motivated to share their knowledge with classmates and the main goal of this strategy has been achieved.
Inspection for understanding: this is important for science and mathematics, in which teacher assign problems or science experiment that teacher has explained in class. Teacher ask students’ to write a story using the terminologies that they learned. If student can use these terminologies in their story properly, it means they grasp what teacher taught to them.
Practice: This step is followed by inspection foe understanding, because if teacher miss the second part than third part of practice has no sense. If teacher fail to inspect the concept that they delivered and next day assign the task to practice this question for 10 times and students are not clear in concept they practice wrong step for 10 times which ruin the whole effort of student as well teacher.
Processing: processing is the last step of this cycle that interpret what students learned in their class. In this step, we judge that students are able to apply the concept what they learned or not.
• Parent Teacher conference
Arrange a conference for parents and teachers, where teachers share the homework schedule with parents. In the schedule, divide the days and subjects that will assign the students, also mention the time duration, mode of homework (written, typed etc.) and date of submission of the given task.
• Arrangement for homework at home
Parents should manage some area for children’s homework. Where all the necessary stationary (pencil, scale, colors, eraser etc.) in their range. This will encourage students for home task.
• One size fits all(Eisner 2003,2004)
We know that; students are differ from each other. They have different rate of retention, different understanding skills and different way to perceive the lessons. So how it is possible to do homework of same goals? Here, teachers are responsible to design the home task according to their students mind level. Means the goal of home is easy that students can do it at their homes.
• Differentiating task
This guideline is against the above mention point but important to discuss here. If teacher wants to get achieve their task, they should assign different task for different students according to their learning ability. There are three ways in which teacher differentiate the homework; through difficulty and amount of work, structure and support framework and leaning style or interest.
o Difficult assignments are big DE-motivator and barrier for students, especially for struggling students. Students who are eager or curious about things are able to accept challenging tasks more willingly rather than others.
o Some students are lazy to write. Structure homework aid struggling or lazy students. Design multiple-choice question or blanks, flowcharts and diagrams are the best task for struggling students. They complete these tasks without frustration.
o Some are feeling motivated when teacher give them ownership. It is depend on student unique learning style or their interests. Allow student to complete this task in the way they want. Either write, typed, in pictorial form, in graphical form etc.
Most teachers are untrained or professionally undeveloped for assigning effective or rethinking homework. Homework is use as a formative assessment; to check their understanding.
