Things To Consider For Successfully Planning An Indian Wedding

Planning an Indian wedding is no easy task as there are so many different areas that have to be taken into consideration, and they all have to come together as a whole and work perfectly on the big day. Although some people like to hire a wedding planner, give him or her an outline of what they would like, and then let the planner take care of the dozens of different aspects of the day, together with the rituals beforehand such as the mendhi, you will finish up spending considerably more than having it done “in house” by family members.

The best way to work it out is to have individual family members taking care of one or two specific tasks, such as the flowers, for instance. You need to sit down and think of all the areas that need to be covered, such as the wedding stage, cars, flowers, colour schemes, drapes, table decorations, and more, and then assign a family member to look after each one. The other thing that is a must – unless you are extremely wealthy and money is no object – is to set a budget for each area. You won’t always be able to stick to it exactly and sometimes you will spend more, but at least it gives you a target to work towards. If you don’t set a budget you will find that the cost is running away from you.

Colour Scheme

One very important area to look at first, when considering Indian wedding decorations, is the central colour scheme. Red and gold are extremely popular, the bride often wearing red, but royal blue, green, pink, and lavender are also good choices. Whatever you decide upon, you can then ensure that everything works around the central theme, from the wedding invitations to the jaimela, and from the table centrepieces to decorations of the groom’s car.

Flowers, of course, are an extremely important part of the proceedings. In rural villages in India the house and the wedding venue must be decorated with strings of marigolds in yellow or orange, and it may be a custom that you would like to follow. Orchids, peonies, and lilies are popular, as are roses intertwined with white flowers - white being a symbol of purity and perfection – such as petunias, gerbera daisies, jasmine, or magnolia grandiflora. Wedding decorations at the venue can include sculptures of flowers, and another popular idea is to have flowers arranged in the form of things like swans or peacocks, and even elephants.

Of course, the stage itself needs a lot of consideration. It is the centre piece of the day where bride and groom are brought in to meet the guests and receive their blessings. Long flowing drapes always work well along with densely packed strings of flowers. The choice of seating for bride and groom is important and it often resembles a throne, but some couples like a chaise longue. Another idea is for the couple to sit on a beautifully decorated swing. Whatever colours are chosen, it is best to ensure that they reflect the colours of the bride and grooms clothing. Remember that this will be the area of the venue that will be photographed the most and it is obviously of the highest significance.

The mandap is also of great importance and it usually has four pillars supporting an overhead canopy which can be of fabrics like silk or satin. There has to be seating for the bride and groom and the pandit, and usually the bride’s parents. The pillars can, of course, be decorated with flowers reflecting the overall colour scheme of the day. Candles can be used also.

Another very important aspect of the venue is the lighting. This can vary quite considerably, depending on the amount of natural light at the venue. A venue with a large amount of windows will let in a lot of natural light, which is fine if it is sunny. However, bear in mind that the day could be overcast or raining, so lighting is an important factor.

One more item to consider is the groom’s car. Sometimes this may be minimally decorated, but it is also possible to have it covered with flowers.
