Learning Through Prototyping At Avantika University
Total Articles: 21
For designers who are inclined towards creating designs that are human centric, prototyping is one of the best ways to bring their ideas into fruition. Prototyping is an effective way to learn through making, and get quick feedback from people the design was intended to be used by. As prototypes are only a preliminary version of a final design, they are not expected to be perfect and polished. This allows the designer to make several iterations and learn more about improving the design through this process. This is why the best B.Des Colleges in India, like Avantika University place huge emphasis on learning through rapid prototyping.
Prototyping is an important part of design thinking as it works on the principle of learning by doing. It can be done in the form of models, mock-ups, storyboards, and role-plays. Any model that can represent the idea of the design you want to test can be considered a prototype. Whatever be the method chosen for prototyping, there are some vital components that need to be considered while carrying out any kind of prototyping. These components are: people, objects, environment and interactions. The people aspect of prototyping includes understanding who the test idea is being made for, the objects aspect covers all objects and people the prototype would be in interaction with, the location or environment of the prototype refers to where it will be functioning and interactions refer to any digital or physical interactions that the design would be expected to have.
Avantika University recognizes the value in learning by doing through processes like prototyping and encourages inclusion of project work based on this process to deepen learning for design students. Their bachelor of design course is among the best in India. In a recent assessment at Avantika University, students of design were required to create prototypes to represent their design ideas. Some of the models they came up with included a cooling bottle, which was a water bottle made out of an earthen clay pot and covered with jute rope to ensure cool drinking water for a long period of time for the user. This bottle can be considered an example of good design as it is economical, eco-friendly and a healthier alternative to plastic bottles. Another model made by a student was inspired by Google Glass; it was named “Gain Glass,” which is a simple, clean design that comprises a wireless receiver and projector to enable the user to watch videos from any video streaming platform online. Undertaking such projects enrich the learning process of a student of design as they are able to better understand all the aspects that go into building something right from its conception to its execution. Design institutions can follow the lead set by Avantika University by including such dynamic learning methods in their pedagogy.
