Learning Through Prototyping At Avantika University

For designers who are inclined towards creating designs that are human centric, prototyping is one of the best ways to bring their ideas into fruition. Prototyping is an effective way to learn through making, and get quick feedback from people the design was intended to be used by. As prototypes are only a preliminary version of a final design, they are not expected to be perfect and polished. This allows the designer to make several iterations and learn more about improving the design through this process. Prototyping is an important part of design thinking as it works on the principle of learning by doing. It can be done in the form of models, mock-ups, storyboards, and role-plays. These components are: people, objects, environment and interactions. Some of the models they came up with included a cooling bottle, which was a water bottle made out of an earthen clay pot and covered with jute rope to ensure cool drinking water for a long period of time for the user. This bottle can be considered an example of good design as it is economical, eco-friendly and a healthier alternative to plastic bottles. Another model made by a student was inspired by Google Glass; it was named “Gain Glass,” which is a simple, clean design that comprises a wireless receiver and projector to enable the user to watch videos from any video streaming platform online. Undertaking such projects enrich the learning process of a student of design as they are able to better understand all the aspects that go into building something right from its conception to its execution. Design institutions can follow the lead set by Avantika University by including such dynamic learning methods in their pedagogy.
