The reduction of the intensity of the fire is the main aim of using these substances. The substances can cool the chemicals by chemical reactions or physical action. The retardant substances are obtained in different forms like powder, foams, and gels.

The sprays or the foams used as the retardants bear the function of blocking the flammability of the materials and usually applied on the place of occurrence either aerially or from the ground level. Each of the chemicals used as retardants works in different ways like cooling the material down or forming a protective layer that prevents the underlying substances from igniting further. Some of the substances release CO2 and water during burning and diluting them in the flame helps in stopping the flame to ignite.

Among the textiles, there are different forms of items found and each one of them has definite properties.
