How An Unimpressive Graeme Swann Became Test Cricket News As A Late Bloomer

Graeme Swann is not a current name in global cricket. However, his breakthrough of Test career with an impressive bowling makes him one of the best bowler that the cricket fraternity could never forget. More interestingly, Swann is such a cricketer who could not return back into the international circuit for a long seven years after his debut ODI. This fact, of a stern comeback into international cricket after a gap of almost a decade is rare in the game’s history. Swann is one of the top late bloomers in not only the longest format of the game, but also in the sport of cricket in overall.

Swann was a spinner for team England. His record tally across all formats of the game makes him one of the best bowlers of the team. The bowler had a record wicket tally of 255 in Test, playing a total number of 109 innings in 60 Test matches. His average in the format is 29.96, with an economy of 2.98. In limited format, Swann had 104 wickets with the career best spell of 5 for 28 runs. He played 79 ODIs with an economy of 4.54. In the shortest format, he played 38 matches to take 51 wickets at an average of 16.84. In his long first-class career, the bowler played 252 matches and took 739 wickets. In the forma his career best is a 7-wicket haul for 33 runs. Also, playing 269 List-A matches, he aggregated a total wicket tally of 305. His List A and first class career expanded for a long stretch since before his international debut, throughout his hiatus of seven years.

His ODI debut in 2000 was against Australia. During that time, team England was coached by Duncan Fletcher. In his debut ODI, Swann could not impress the coach. In the match, he finished with no remarkable achievements and hence was not picked for the next campaign. He made his way back to domestic circuit playing county cricket for almost eight years. In domestic circuit, especially in List A cricket, he made several remarkable records making his way back to his next ODI series against Sri Lanka. This time, he had a strong performance in both bowling and batting, earning the permanent position in the squad.

Still, Graeme’s best performance that made him a Test Cricket News was on is debut Test match against India in the month of December, 2008. It was only in the first over of his maiden Test match, where he nicked two top batsmen of the time in a single over. He removed Gautam Gambhir and Rahul Dravid. Ultimately, the bowler finished with eight wickets in the two matches of the series. This is how Graeme Swann became a legendary late bloomer in test cricket
