Summary of Lau V. Nichols case
In regards to education, the case of Lau V. Nichols was on whether the school system should provide a program that addresses the language problem on non-English speaking student. In this case, the court rules that school districts that are getting federal funds must act to correct the linguistic deficits of students. This was to ensure that these students get an equal education. The case happened when Kinmon Lau and other Chinese non-English speaking students decided to compel the San Francisco Unified School district (Salil & Hoosain 2005). This was done in order to provide all Chinese non-English speaking students with bilingual compensatory educating in the English language.
Students in the case claimed that they were not getting special help in school because of their inability to speak English. After the Supreme Court had found out that the lack of linguistic appropriate accommodation denied the Chinese students equal education opportunity, the court ruled in favor of the students. The court provided the children with a chance of receiving a meaningful education despite their language background. The ruling by the court greatly expanded the rights of all children who have limited English skills so as they can receive special help in learning English.
