Who doesn't love a colourful garden? But having that perfect garden isn't everyone's cup of tea. It takes creativity, know-how, labour and a ton of patience to create one. If you're ready to take up all that hassle, here are 5 most important general gardening tips from reliable plant expert in UK to get you started.

A clear idea
Among the most common mistakes rookie planters tend to make is not having a clear idea of what they want their garden to look like. Is it a vegetable garden? A flower garden? A herb garden? Would they prefer having annuals that will give the best colours for most of summer or would they prefer perennials?

You must fix your mind on what you expect from your garden and then work towards achieving that. Having answers to these questions is the foremost step to getting started with a wonderful private garden.

2. Pick suitable spots

Most vegetables and flower plants need at least 6 hours of sun every day. It is, therefore, advisable to spend an entire day in your dedicated space for the garden. See how the sun moves around the day. Make sure to note the exact spots that receive the maximum amount of sunlight.

If the plot doesn't get too much of sunshine - that's alright. There are plenty of plants out there that can work with less sunshine. But make sure to pick the saplings accordingly. It is also not a bad idea to get an expert to help you out with choosing the perfect saplings in relation to the amount of sunlight needed.

Additionally, make sure your garden spot isn't too far from a water outlet. Carrying a garden hose over a long distance will be another hassle altogether.

Improve the soil condition
Irrespective of whether or not the space ever had a garden before, you'll need to improve the soil conditions. This is a much simpler process than many think.

All one needs to do is add a layer of compost, some old manure, and some decayed leaves. Using plain old organic matter will help replenish the soil condition better than any synthetic chemicals.

One can also choose to do a professional soil test from horticulture and soil test facilities. This will give an idea of the exact state of that soil and the way to go about improving it.

Know whether to dig or not
Digging is useful to loosen up the soil so that roots can penetrate easier. It also makes sure there is plenty of room for aeration. However, digging when the land is either too dry or too wet can lead to the soil losing its essential structure.

One must dig only when the soil has just the right amount of moist. It's easy enough to tell - this is ideally when the mud forms a round ball in your fist but can easily drop when let go. When suitable, use a spade to turn the top of the soil over to mix the organic matter properly.

Note: Spraying your spade or shovel with a Teflon or Silicone lubricant makes it non-sticky and perfect for gardening.

Lighten heavy pots for easier lifting
A good garden is the right mix of potted and rooted plants. However, anyone who's been a passionate gardener will tell you how much of a pain regularly lifting heavy pots can be. The good news is there's an easy enough work around for that.

Fill up the pot by one-third or one-half full of packing peanuts. Hide it by covering with a piece of landscape fabric that matches the colour of the soil. In fact, you can further reduce the weight by using a pot mix of vermiculite and peat moss.

Notice that there aren't any points in here about which specific plant to go for. This is because every garden represents the owner's personality and tastes. So, that is a decision you and only you must make, letting no one else influence you!
