Fitness is a crucial aspect in cricket. In present times, the question of retirement arrives as an eerie to cricketers when they run pass the age of 35. Test cricket is the most tedious of all formats, where there are practically no limits of batting and bowling. Batsmen play for whole day or even surpass it, while bowlers toil long hours delivering up to 80 overs or even more. Most cricketers retire from the format earlier than other two keeping them fit for the shorter games. Against this backdrop, it would be rather surprising to know that the oldest players ever to walk on an international Test are 50 and 52 years old. Adding more to the surprise, the cricketers played together in the team to become a Test cricket news.

It was back in 1928-30 season, when England test team featured both Wilfred Rhodes and George Gunn. In the time, Rhodes was 52 years old and Gunn was 50. Rhodes is the oldest player ever to play test cricket. He played the last international match at the age of 52 years and 165 days, in 1930. The international player was featured in 58 Test matches taking 127 wickets and scoring 2,325 runs. Rhodes represented Yorkshire in domestic circuit of England. The player has a record as a first-class player featured in 1,110 first-class matches. In first-class cricket he also holds the record as the highest wicket-taker. He took 4,204 wickets in the format.
On the other hand, George Gunn played 15 Tests from year 1907 to 1930 for England. However, his first-class career expanded till 1932. The player had an impressive record of success in any condition and against any type of delivery. At the age of 52, in 1931, Gunn scored 183 runs against Warwickshire. His son was also batting in the same inning scoring an unbeaten century. It was rare occurrence in first-class history. On the 1929-30 tour to West Indies, he played alongside the English team with other senior players. He was 50 years old at that time. Critics comment that Gunn should have tallied more runs in his long span of cricketing. But it was his timely absence from the game, that marginalized the player.

Gunn and Rhodes are the oldest Test players in cricket history. The rare moment came up in season 1929-30, when both played side by side in the English team. The players created a record in Test that is most unlikely to break soon. The pair brought forth the highest combined age of cricketers taking a wicket. In the final test match against West Indies in Kingston, the pair dismissed Clifford Roach, the West Indies player. The bowler was Rhodes, who delivered to Roach, the batsman, the latter nicked a catch to Gunn. This Rhodes and Gunn became the oldest pair in cricket to take a wicket. The combined age of the players came out as 103 years. The match was at Sabina Park.
