Fitness is a crucial aspect in cricket. In present times, the question of retirement arrives as an eerie to cricketers when they run pass the age of 35. Test cricket is the most tedious of all formats, where there are practically no limits of batting and bowling. Batsmen play for whole day or even surpass it, while bowlers toil long hours delivering up to 80 overs or even more. Most cricketers retire from the format earlier than other two keeping them fit for the shorter games. Against this backdrop, it would be rather surprising to know that the oldest players ever to walk on an international Test are 50 and 52 years old. Adding more to the surprise, the cricketers played together in the team to become a Test cricket news.
It was back in 1928-30 season, when England test team featured both Wilfred Rhodes and George Gunn. In the time, Rhodes was 52 years old and Gunn was 50. On the 1929-30 tour to West Indies, he played alongside the English team with other senior players. He was 50 years old at that time. Critics comment that Gunn should have tallied more runs in his long span of cricketing. But it was his timely absence from the game, that marginalized the player.
