Shooting On Film: Analogue Photography In The 21st Century
Total Articles: 16
This idea has been challenged by a recent resurgence in the popularity of analogue technologies, which continue to be utilised, despite the dominance of digital.
For a number of years, the replacement of analogue technologies with digital has been taken for granted, as though digitisation is a linear progression or natural process of innovation, but some analogue technologies are able to resist this process.
The tendency to embrace digital at the expense of analogue technologies has taken several forms, but there are a number of examples that follow a similar pattern.
Since the 1980s, DVDs have replaced video tape, cassettes and vinyl records were superseded by CDs - then by digital music files like MP3s, and even books and print publications such as magazines have been threatened by ebooks and other online text formats.
Vinyl records are experiencing a resurgence in popularity, and a range of boutique film cameras on the market suggest something similar with analogue photography.
Digital media has many advantages - convenience, simplicity, and in many cases, affordability - but the continuing love for analogue aesthetics is more than simple nostalgia.
Film photography allows creative versatility and unique results which are not possible with digital cameras.
The way film interacts with light may create a range of effects which photographers can use to achieve various different results in their work. Click here for more information about creative photography courses.
Using different exposures, shutter speeds, film and developing techniques, analogue photography opens up a vast array of stylistic options for photographers.
Digital image software filters which recreate some of the aesthetic possibilities of film photography have become widely used in recent years in social media platforms such as Instagram and a number of popular photography apps.
These filters mimic some of the stylistic elements of film photography, from types of exposure and dynamic range designed to be reminiscent of particular film photographs, to the grainy look of old and even degraded film.
Beyond this particular trend, however, is an increased interest in film photography. A range of film cameras on the market catering for a new generation of analogue photographers reflect this.
For many photographers, film offers a range of qualities which cannot be replicated or equalled by digital methods.
Photographers using film have far more control over the images they produce than people using digital cameras, but require more in-depth knowledge and understanding of the technical aspects of photography.
Film doesn’t have the instant results or simplicity that digital cameras offer, but many photography enthusiasts - both hobbyists and professionals - remain loyal to film photography.
To get the best results from film, it is highly advantageous to have some technical understanding of the practical theory behind photography.
The Centre for Creative Photography runs courses and workshops on a range of traditional film photography techniques, darkroom processing techniques and post-production - as well as a full range of digital photography subjects.
