It was the 24th match of the Reliance World Cup 1987, October 31st. India nicked a massive victory over New Zealand by 9 wickets with 107 balls remaining. It was the match when a bowler took the first Hat-trick in a world cup match. It was the 42nd over of the first inning, when Chetan Sharma, India bowler took down three New Zealand batsmen at consecutive balls. Middle order batsmen Ken Rutherford, Ian Smith and Ewen Chatfeild were removed slogging New Zealand at 182 for 8 wickets. In the inning New Zealand scored 221 runs for 9 wickets.

Before the consecutive dismissal, New Zealand player DN Patel knocked 40 runs as the highest score of the inning. India bowlers has a good dominance at the Nagpur match. Kapil Dev, India captain decided to send in six bowlers including himself. It was only the captain who could not nick a single wicket in 6 overs he bowled. Each of other bowlers had a single wicket, with Sharma picking up three. His economy was 5.10, the highest along with Maninder Singh. In fact, New Zealand middle order were flaring their score with players Rutherford partnering with others down the line. It was this trend that Dev broke introducing Sharma on the attack.

It was the sixth over that Sharma bowled, which broke into the New Zealand line up. In the fourth ball of the over, he took down Rutherford. In the next consecutive deliveries, he scalped Smith and Chatfield. The delivery that had Rutherford was an off-cutter that smashed the middle stumps travelling between the pads and the bat. When Smith came to bat, Sharma bowled a sharp-cutter that went to crack the off-stump of the wicket. The last ball was a full delivery that came between Chatfield’s legs. The player tried to hit the delivery walking across the stumps but missing to hit the ball. It was moment when the world cup cricket live video made India proud.
In the chase, India’s task was easy. There were two partnership stretches that emerged adequate to nick the victory. Openers K Srikkanth and Sunil Gavaskar partnered for 136 runs. The latter scored 75 off 58 balls, while Gavaskar carried on his knock to a century of 103 off just 88 balls. Mohammad Azharuddin scored 41 reaching the victory mark in 32.1 overs. Gavaskar and Sharma were both awarded Player of the Match. For his impressive feat, Sharma was named as the “Hat-trick man.” He created a history in cricket that day.
