4 Amazing Tips For Better Lawn Care
Total Articles: 18
Regardless of what some people might say or claim, there is no denying that human beings are adversely impacting the ecological balance of our planet. A whole lot of the destruction wrought upon this planet could be traced to our action and inaction. There's the increasing levels of greenhouse gases in our air, the destruction of the rainforests, water pollution, the list continues.
As an example, scientists have found the presence of the pesticide DDT in the Arctic ecosystem. The pesticide was used throughout World War Two to fight malaria in Africa. In the 1970s, after it was discovered that it adversely affected the reproduction of birds, the chemical pesticide was banned. This is just one of the stories which concern our impacts on this planet. The fact is that our presence has negative consequences for Earth. We're an environmental nightmare.
Of course, it doesn’t mean that there is nothing to be done. The small things help. Even the way you take care of your lawn may have a beneficial effect on the environment.
Here are a few tips for yard care that is also good for the environment. While lawn maintenance tools like electric lawn mowers are enhanced to minimise their environmental footprint, some aspects of lawn maintenance still wreak havoc on the local ecosystem. The following article is for people who want to minimise the effects of their lawn care on the environment. Let us begin.
1. Eco-friendly pest management
DDT worked beautifully to exterminate pests and insects but also adversely affected several bird species as I previously mentioned. Birds exposed to DDT had a weakened system. Their eggshells were thinner, contributing to a higher bird mortality rate. People still must be careful when it comes to pesticides and insecticides, especially those of a synthetic chemical nature, since DDT has prohibited for agricultural and commercial use.
One alternative to chemical pesticides is biopesticides. Biopesticides are basically chemicals derived from the environment that control the pest population instead of killing. For instance, a pesticide obstructs the breeding patterns of some moths. These pesticides have been targeted and do not affect other animals and insects.
2. Mulching and composting
Instead of disposing of the waste produced by your yard and garden, you can turn it into something valuable for the soil. Turning your lawn waste into mulch and compost is just one way. The yard waste returns to the earth.
After mowing, don't throw away your lawn clippings. You can leave them on the soil to naturally decompose, nourishing the plants and the earth underneath. If you want, it is also possible to add them to a compost pile.
3. Use rainwater
With our rivers and aquifers there needs to be a better utilization of our freshwater resources that are remaining. California in the United States prolonged drought lasting several years, placing a strain on its already dwindling water supply. Instead of squandering water on watering the yard, why don't you use rainwater instead?
Rainwater is totally free and, depending on where you live, also plentiful. If you live in an area that is arid, you may use large plastic barrels to collect rainwater. The rainwater can subsequently be used to water your grass and plants. If you're handy enough, you can devise an irrigation system which draws water.
4. Eco-friendly equipment
Gone are the times of noisy and destructive lawn maintenance tools. Many manufacturers make eco-friendly lawn care equipment to appeal to an increasingly environmentally-conscious public. For instance, lawn mowers do not hurt as far as they used to thanks to advances in its design and technology.
Electric lawn mowers are an excellent way to decrease your fossil fuel usage. Instead of utilizing petrol, you can just connect it and you're good to go.
