The earliest recording of a New Year celebrations dates back to around 2000 BC in Mesopotamia in mid-March, and the New Year’s Day was celebrated on January 1st of the Julian calendar for the first time in 45 BC. From that time forth till now New Year celebrations have undergone significant changes in the way they are celebrated. Many New Year resolutions are made, people attend church services, they participate in parades, sporting events, and family and friends get together. The celebrations also include feasting, gift exchanges, count downs, watch-night services, and so on. But the most common thing remained the same as a tradition over the years i.e. family or social gatherings, where many people dance, eat, drink, and watch or light fireworks which start during the New Year’s Eve and extend till mid-night to welcome the New Year. It is in fact a fresh start. Keeping all the worries and sorrows of the past year aside, a year filled with hope of a bright future is celebrated worldwide on this public holiday.
New Year was traditionally a religious feast, Christians celebrated this day as the “Feast of the Circumcision of Christ” as Jesus Christ, the Messiah was believed to be circumcised on the eighth day after his birth i.e. the 25th of December which is celebrated as Christmas, but as the years passed by, the tradition has become a grand celebration by almost everyone to celebrate the New Year’s Eve i.e. 31st December. During this time family and friends get together and the tables are laden with food for the mid-night meal. This meal may contain anything virtually depending on the region and people who are involved like in many countries it is mandatory to decorate the table with twelve different foods to symbolize prosperity for all the coming twelve months. They also usually have a very lavish food and rich gifts to be exchanged. In yet other countries families and relatives switch off the lights at midnight, and then celebrate by cutting the vassilopita or the basil’s pie which usually has a coin hidden in it which is believed to bring luck to the person who finds it in their piece. This is the most popular tradition which was followed by many people in the past and which is still being followed by many though the concept of the hidden coin is not included.
The New Year cake comes to the rescue of all such people who wants to continue this trend of a cake bringing luck. A New Year cake is included in almost every household celebrating the New Year’s Eve. The cake is cut at midnight after the countdown to reflect the sweet happiness that the New Year is going to bring into their life. It is distributed to everyone who is present for the party and during these night parties the New Year cake is expected to bring all luck, joy and also eliminate the worries and all the bad things that happened in the past year and bring only happy and good things in the coming year. It is indeed difficult to decide which cake to be included in the party. The New Year celebrations will be complete with these super yummy and delicious delicacies which are shared with kisses and joy among the family to make the love bond stronger with its sweetness. This sweet exploration symbolizes a higher position which is to say a higher income, the prosperous growth of children, and the promise of a better and bright year ahead. During the past, the New Year cake was simply used as a style statement which was only a decorative piece in the party. As years passed by, the cake was served to impress the guests and it is considered to bring luck and many blessings to the ones who eat it during the New Year.
