Contacting adhesive is a bonding agent that sticks things together. When spread on a surface, it dries by swift evaporation. The best part is, when it is dry, it sticks to itself without any added external effort. This makes it an amazing adhesive for gluing non-porous things.

Why is contacting adhesive used widely?

Contacting Adhesive is extensively used for its easy application, excellent adhesion and fast setting properties. To join materials together, it is applied on both sides. When the flammable solvent evaporates, it binds itself within a given amount of time. It can be used to glue rubber, cardboard, leather, vinyl, carpets and various other materials.

One of the most common uses of contacting adhesive is plastic laminates, used in bathrooms and kitchens. Other glues would definitely fail to stick laminate countertops as the moisture wouldn’t escape from within them. But, contacting adhesive is dry, so it doesn’t present any problem!

Types of Contacting Adhesive:

Contact Adhesive is available in both water and solvent-based technologies. However, the first polymer which was used in contacting adhesive formulations is natural rubber. Though, it is almost replaced by synthetic polymers.

Elastomers and Rubber are marked by their high degree of elasticity and flexibility. Therefore, the base used is usually Poly Chloroprene but Acrylic Polymers, Butyl Rubbers, Natural Rubber, Styrene Butadiene Rubber, Polyurethane are also utilized.

Water based adhesive must be fully dried to get maximum adhesion. But solvent-based systems dry quickly enabling swifter bonding. The solvent based system remains sticky for almost 12 hours. It provides a balance between shear strength, peel adhesion and stickiness.

Consequently, solvent contact adhesives are resistant to stress peaks and are produced by force action on the edge of the bond. This adhesive also has a thick consistency making it suitable for precision work.

Characteristics of Contacting Adhesive:

Due to the peel and shear strength of contacting adhesives, it can hold a load for a longer amount of time. So, they are generally considered as semi-structured, with falling properties in between the non-structural and conventional adhesives.

Contact adhesives present greater bond strength just after the joints are made. The joined components undergo added finishing operation without fixturing or clamping. In reality, difficulties are faced in working with contact adhesives at times, due to the grab that prevents repositioning owning to non-alignment.

Difficulties faced due to failures of contacting adhesive:

Minimal application of adhesive
Applying a thick adhesive coating
Waiting for a long time before assembling
Not letting the adhesive dry before assembling

Nevertheless, an important performance advantage of contacting adhesives is auto-adhesion. Poly Chloroprene contacting adhesive provide the ultimate bond strength for efficient assembly.

The contacting adhesives are tough. Therefore, it can withstand wide and quick changes in moisture and temperature. The moisture and chemical resistance of this adhesive is generally sufficient for using them in interior and exterior industrial applications in footwear industry, automotive and construction.

Advantages of Contacting Adhesives:

Immediate high shear strength
Easy application can be made by hand or on-site
Excellent adhesion to even non-porous materials
It presents flexible bonds due to elastomeric base polymer
Good aging and resistance depends on formulation
Perfect for bonding soft fabrics, rubber, cardboard, leather, vinyl and carpets

Disadvantages of Contacting Adhesives:

Immediate repositioning is not allowed
Generally, the flammable solvents are needed as some are toxic
The water-based systems are generally poor in performance than the solvent-based ones
No gap filler available
Critical open times and drying depends on the formulation
Poor strength compared to other adhesives

When you require a strong bond, contacting adhesives are the best. It joins easily and doesn’t leave any oily or greasy feeling. Mainly, it is used for joining fabrics that can be used for fixing plastic laminates to wooden base creating a permanent and sturdy bond.

Resource Box:

Sealants and Tools provide a wide variety of trade supplies which includes the best brands of Industrial and Trade Sealants. They are an established company with more than 30 years of combined experience in all kinds of services, like – sealant pointing, contact adhesive, gardening and other remedies for the construction industry.
