On Rock Falls and Preventing Accidents- Things to Do In Case of Emergency
Climbing and tackling cliffs and mountains can be difficult and a dangerous outdoor activity. Even experienced rock climbers and enthusiasts still face challenges in the outdoors or when tackling the mountains. Rocks can dislodge from its place hitting a climber below, or a climber can accidentally pull a large block of rock which can sever the lead line. These can cause injuries, or worse can even cost the life of the climber. While there is no way to predict rock falls and the injuries that come with rock climbing, it’s possible for enthusiasts and beginners to mitigate the risks and prepare for emergencies.
Avoid or at least climb with caution during shoulder seasons- These are the spring and fall months which may provide delicate conditions for first-time rock climbers. Some regions may undergo free and thaw cycles, where there are erratic changes in temperature levels. Repeated changes in temperature levels can weaken rock formations, thus increasing the risk for rock falls or rock breakage.
Focus on where your rope makes contact-A thorough check-up where the rope makes contact during leading is an extra safety step that can pay dividends in the long run. Always take the extra time to check if you are working on loose rock formations. If you suspect that the rock formation may not be as steady or solid as required, you can simply knock on the stone formation. A solid and reliable rock formation should not make any sounds, and ‘hollow rock formations’ may create low-pitch or high pitch noises. If the formation, avoid touching or working on it.
Always work on quality and industry-passed climbing gears like ropes- Climbing ropes come in many types and sizes, and it’s even recommended to own a collection of ropes. Check the standards set by the Union Internationale Des Association D'Apinisme (UIAA) provides a testing standard for climbing ropes, and work with a retailer that understands industry standards not just for ropes but other gears as well like carabiners, rope grabs and pulleys.
What to do in case of accidents like rock falls?
Accidents will happen and if does, make sure you respond intelligently and with caution. Don’t let the situation control you; take control and avoid panicking. Allow your mind to settle in and focus on the issue, and this can be done by taking long deep breaths. Assess the situation, the environment and check your body for sustained injuries. And if you have a companion, you can secure yourself first by anchoring into the wall using available rock climbing supplies and check on the condition of your companion. If the injures are serious, call an emergency hotline. Rock climbers recommend carrying a cell phone and saving the local emergency hotline or simply call 911. Flashlights or whistle can also work in generating attention during emergencies.
