As the 62 billion-dollar China-Pakistan Corridor (CPEC) takes shape, Gwadar is set to become the next most important city in the region. Authorities believe that Gwadar would be able to replicate this success in a much shorter span of time; 5 years to have its port operational and another 10 to 15 years to develop the city of Gwadar.
Gwadar has a strategic advantage compared to the other ports in the region. It is nestled right by the Arabian Sea in the Balochistan region of Pakistan, being in close proximity to various world shipping routes, including the Hormuz Strait which oversees about 20% of the world’s oil passage. This is also in line with being close to two-thirds of the world’s proven oil reserves.
Built around the Shenzhen model, Gwadar port city is set to become a game-changer in the region. With CPEC, the trade between China and Pakistan, and China with the world is set to make a leap jump. A new 2,700 kilometer running along the corridor would connect Gwadar to the Xinjiang province in Northwest China, which will have a huge economic impact on the two nations. Transit times and costs would reduce by around 60-70%, increasing efficiency and ease of trade between the countries, and the world.
