A Veteran Player's Guides Of World Of Warcraft
Total Articles: 369
If you’re a new player of the World of Warcraft (WoW), it’s likely that you might not know where to begin the game. That's to say, the game has such a huge following and reputation, it’s easy to see how it could be a little overwhelming to a new player.
If you’ve told people that you’re just getting into it, chances are you’ve probably already heard so many strategies and opinions about the game from veteran players. In fact, you might even be sick of all the advice and maybe even a little turned off. Don’t let overenthusiastic veterans turn you off! If you’re still a little confused or overwhelmed about getting started, you might just need some basic, simple advice. Good news: you’re in the right place.
In my opinion, the most important thing to know about WoW is that you should play to have fun. Remember, no matter what anyone tells you, there’s no right or wrong way to play. You have to make the game your own. Take the time to explore and discover the WoW items and characters that make gameplay enjoyable for you.
There are a few simple things you can do to help you get started in the game more quickly and with the right frame of mind. Here’s my personal advice about how to have a great experience when you first start playing.
Don’t rush and don’t feel overwhelmed. There’s no reason to try to do everything at once. You don’t even have to understand what everything is right away. Take your time, explore. Get to know your character and build them up in a way that you both love and understand.
Personally, I have to play with a mouse. Once you’re comfortable with the basics of the game, you might even consider upgrading to a gaming mouse. They have a lot of programmable buttons if you’re into that kind of personalization. Another great thing about them is they’re ergonomically designed. I’m almost embarrassed to admit how long some of my WoW sessions have lasted, but the right mouse keeps your hand from cramping up. That said, there are players who prefer to use the arrows or WASD buttons and other keybinds. It’s really up to you but it’s important to know that there are options.
Join a guild if you have time. I’m lucky that I have a lot of spare time to play and my schedule allows me to collaborate with other players. But don’t feel that you have to play with other people. Some people just don’t like that kind of thing. If you prefer to play on your own, you can still have plenty of fun in the game. If you do have time, I can’t say enough about how much fun I’ve had with my guild. They become allies, resources, and genuine friends.
Play with a friend. If you already know someone who plays, it can be really fun to play together. If they’ve been playing for a while, you’ll learn a lot. If they’re new, too, you can fumble around and figure things out together.
If you’re playing with other people, don’t get discouraged. Remember, some of the players you will encounter have been playing for a long time. I’m talking characters in the game and the humans behind them. Don’t let a character’s fancy gear make you feel bad, you’ll get there. And WoW is just like anything else, all kinds of people play and they’re not all going to be nice. Treat other players the way you want to be treated and you’ll earn yourself a good reputation. Eventually, you’ll be the experienced player coming across someone who’s just starting. Be nice and remember how you feel now!
If you’re just starting, don’t make leveling up the goal. If you’re playing through a second time, it’s fun to try to do it as fast as you can. But when you first start, it’s best to get to know all the different aspects of the game first. You might find something you’re particularly good at or really like doing. Plus, once you get to level 85, the character of the game changes a bit so spend as much time messing around as you can before then.
Appreciate the game. Seriously, the graphics are just amazing. Pay attention to the artistry of the WoW items and characters. The quests and details are worth reading and learning about, too. The goal of the game shouldn’t be to get to the end. It really is an amazing experience and you should spend time taking in as much as you can.
Make a character you like to look at. I admit, this sounds a little silly, but you might come to regret giving your character green hair or something once you've been playing for a while. You should also pick a profession you like. You’ll be doing it for a long time. For example, don’t choose engineering if you hate collecting supplies. You’ll just come to resent it a little and you won’t have as much fun playing.
I honestly can’t say enough about this game. Part of what I love most about it is the details, which is why so much of my advice involves basically slowing down to appreciate them. Every character has such a personality and the stories behind the quests and everything are worth getting into. For me, it’s what sucked me into the game.
One more thing you should keep in mind is that: WoW is only a game. Don’t let it take over your life. When you come back from work or school or whatever, it will be there for you. That's said, something that people don’t play might not understand is how something that is “only a game” can bring about real, genuine friendships. If you’re into playing socially, you’ll meet people who you’ll look forward to hearing from. If you’re lucky, you’ll find people who will become friends in the real world. I have!
