1. Accept That Things Have Changed

If your loved one starts depending on your then you may take it as a major responsibility. Make yourself ready to be the sole protector and caregiver of your loved one. Your previous attitude and emotions towards your loved one may not apply when you are in charge. Ask advice from your loved one before making a decision or important life matters. In this way, your loved one may feel wanted and loved.

2. Slow Down Things & Think before Taking Each Step

Caring for your loved one is a long term commitment and not on a temporary basis. Don't try to rush things with your loved one and find solutions which may benefit you both. Avoid controlling each and everything as a caregiver. Let the whole caregiving process reveal itself to you and try to adapt as much as you can.

3. Expect Nothing from Your Loved One

Your loved one may open up to you at an older age. Don't expect love and sympathy from your loved one whether he or she expresses it or not. If your loved one shares his or her new and deep feelings then that’s fantastic. But, caring for seniors and expecting they would love you back is a poor choice. It may be better for you to have no expectations at all than to have your hopes dashed.

4. Get Ready To Face an Angry Behavior

Your loved one may think about losing his or her authority after you start caring for him or her. You may feel agitated with your loved one for not listening or not telling you important things. You should make yourself ready to manage your loved one's life without being dominant. But, don't try to argue with your loved one and maintain a peaceful atmosphere in the house. Don't overreact if your loved one may lash out about his or her authority. Give your love autonomy to make decisions. Suggest your loved one different option instead of giving him or her orders. Let your loved one feel that you are not running his or her life. Have a discussion with your loved one and let him or her decide about his or her care and situation.

5. Separate Your Loved One Emotional Skills from Cognitive Skills

Try to distinguish between your loved one's emotional and cognitive skills. You might be familiar with your loved one's emotional dysfunction or know how to deal with it. But, your loved one's cognitive skills may change at an older age and may be new to you. Observe your loved one's behavior in different situations to see the changes.

6. Take Care of Yourself

Don't indulge yourself completely in caring for your loved one. Make time to take walks, stretch out, and eat a healthy diet to lead a high-quality life. Take time for yourself and embrace your lifelong passion and interests. It is important to rejuvenate yourself while caring for your loved one to stay happy.
