With your hectic schedules, you might find yourself visiting your dentist less. But even if your teeth look okay, it is still important that you regularly get them checked. The question is: How often? The truth is it is up to you. One person might require several visits in a year, but others are fine with yearly maintenance checkups.

There really is no right number of recommended dental visits, as dental health greatly varies from one person to another. The American Dental Association recommends one or two annual visits. This way, even when you have perfect dental health, you can still get professional cleaning and checkup to maintain your healthy mouth.

Aside from your regular visits, you should also schedule an appointment if you see changes in your dental health, especially when you feel pain. Hot or cold sensitivity, bleeding or swollen hums, chipped tooth and persistent toothache are just some of the issues that you need to discuss with your dentist as soon as you can.

When getting dental work, you will most likely be asked to make follow-appointments to make sure that the instruments are behaving properly and see if the procedure is giving results. Doing so will also answer your questions on personal care post-procedure. This holds true in procedures like crown placement, cavity filling, and denture fitting.

There are certain groups of people who are considered to be at a high risk for dental problems. They might have to visit their dentist more often than the usual per recommendations and their individual health requirements. Below is a list of individuals who might have to increase their number of dental visits because of changes in habits, hormones or health.

1. Cancer patients. If you are undergoing chemotherapy as cancer treatment, it is important to see your dentist before treatment begins. Chemotherapy usually leads to dry mouth and jaw stiffness that can affect your quality of life.

2. Cigarette smokers. Smoking gives you a higher risk of tooth decay and gum disease. While it is best that you quit smoking, your dentist can offer you ways on how to take care of your mouth.

3. Pregnant women. The increase of hormones during pregnancy can lead to increased tooth sensitivity and decay, and swollen gums. Pregnancy can also increase the risk for oral infections that can lead to preterm delivery.

So how often should you visit the dentist? It will depend on your individual health, risk factors and present concerns. But in the end, visiting your dentist once or twice in a year – along with any additional visits recommended by your dentist – should be enough to ensure that your teeth and gums are healthy in the long term.
