4 Simple Tips For Environmentally Friendly Lawn Care
Total Articles: 20
Despite what climate denialists would say, it is indisputable that human beings are adversely affecting our planet's ecological balance. A lot of the destruction wrought upon Earth can be traced to human action (or inaction). There's the rising levels of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere, the destruction of our rainforests, water pollution, the list goes on.
For instance, scientists have discovered the pesticide DDT in the Arctic ecosystem. Also known as dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, the pesticide was widely used during the Second World War to combat malaria in Africa. In the early 1970s, DDT was banned after it was discovered that it adversely affected the reproduction of birds. This is just one of the stories that concern our effects on this planet. The fact is that people are bad for Earth. We are an environmental nightmare.
This doesn't mean that there's nothing to be done. The little things help. Even the way you care for your lawn can have a positive effect on the environment.
Here are a few tips for lawn care that is also environmentally conscious. While lawn care tools such as petrol lawn mowers have been improved to minimise their environmental footprint, some aspects of lawn care still wreak havoc on the environment. This article is designed to minimise the effects of lawn care on our ecosystem. Let's get started.
1. Eco-friendly pest control
As I've previously mentioned, DDT worked spectacularly against pests and insects but also drove many bird species to near-extinction. Birds exposed to DDT had a severely weakened reproductive system. Their eggshells were thinner, contributing to a higher bird mortality rate. While DDT has long since banned for commercial and agricultural use, people still have to be careful when it comes to insecticides and pesticides, especially those of a chemical nature.
One alternative to chemical pesticides is biopesticides. Biopesticides are basically chemicals derived from nature that controls the pest population instead of killing. For instance, a pheromone pesticide obstructs the mating patterns of some undesirable moths. These pesticides are targeted and do not affect other animals and insects.
2. Mulching and composting
Instead of disposing of the organic waste produced by your lawn and garden, you can turn it into something beneficial for the environment. Turning your lawn waste into mulch and compost is one great way to reduce your footprint. Instead of languishing in a landfill, the lawn waste returns to the earth through natural decomposition.
For example, don't throw away your lawn clippings after mowing. You can leave them in the soil to decompose, nourishing the plants and the earth underneath. You can also add them to a compost pile.
3. Use rainwater
With our rivers and aquifers quickly drying up, there has to be a better use of our remaining freshwater sources. The U.S. state of California has been experiencing a prolonged drought for some time now, putting a strain on its already dwindling water supply. Instead of wasting potable water on watering the lawn, why not use rainwater instead?
Rainwater is free and depending on where you live, often plentiful. If you live in a dry area, you can use plastic barrels to collect rainwater. The rainwater can then be used to water your grass and plants, among other things. If you're handy enough, you can even devise an irrigation system that automatically draws water from the rainwater barrels.
4. Eco-friendly equipment
Gone are the days of the noisy and destructive lawn care tools. Many manufacturers now make eco-friendly lawn care equipment to cater to an increasingly environmentally-conscious public. Even petrol lawn mowers don't harm as much as they used to, with recent improvements to its design and engineering.
Electric lawn mowers, on the other hand, are a great way to reduce your fossil fuel use. Instead of using diesel petrol, you can just connect it to a power outlet and you're good to go.
