Spark Plug Free Petrol Engines Could Appear In Your Local Mazda Dealership
Total Articles: 4
When you visit Mazda dealerships, Perth drivers often expect to see the latest innovations in technology. One thing you may not have expected is a petrol engine without spark plugs. However, Mazda has just announced that they have developed the first mass produced petrol engine which is spark plug free. It is due to be implemented in 2019 and is said to offer the fuel efficiency you would expect in a diesel while offering improved driveability and power.
When Will We See It?
The “SkyActiv-X” or “Spark Controlled Compression Ignition” engine, forms a major part of the “Sustainable Zoom Zoom 2030” long term strategy put forth by the Japanese company. The engine is expected to have its debut in the fourth generation Mazda3. This means that the SkyActiv-X engine should arrive in Australian Mazda dealership locations in 2019 under the bonnet of the small car.
Following the initial roll out, the SkyActiv-X is anticipated to proliferate the majority of the Mazda model lines. This will include the next generation Mazda2 and CX-3. Mazda has made the claim that this will be the first commercial use of this type of powerplant technology. While some other manufacturers may have trialled this type of unit in several applications, Mazda will be the first to enter mass production.
The Engine Technology:
In a similar way to a conventional diesel, the SkyActiv-X ignites the petrol fuel mix when it is compressed by the pistons. According to Mazda, this version of the technology solves two of the main problems that have prevented more widespread use. It maximises the zone where compression ignition is possible and achieving a seamless transition between the spark ignition and compression ignition. The SkyActiv-X also improves torque output by between 10 and 30 percent, while boosting fuel economy by up to 30 percent. This is due to the inclusion of a compression ignition and supercharger. Mazda also says that the technology can also equal or even exceed the fuel efficiency of a SkyActiv-D diesel engine currently used.
Aside from the environmental benefits, Mazda claims that acceleration and driving performance are also key improvement areas.
The Sustainable Zoom Zoom Plan:
The initial Sustainable Zoom Zoom plan was presented in 2007. However, the new environmental strategy is aimed at reducing the corporate average carbon dioxide emissions. The goals are to reduce the emissions by 50 percent over the levels recorded in 2010 by 2030. This is to precede a 90 percent reduction by 2050. So, we should be seeing more and more efficient and eco friendly options in new Mazda dealerships in the months and years to come.
