Recently my husband and I bunked our office. Sounds surprising but yes we did it and together we planned a day out with our little one. This was not going to be the usual visit to a mall or a shopping arcade but a day where we show our little one the rich cultural heritage that Delhi holds.
Our first pit stop was The Red Fort. Built during the Mugal era, the red sandstone walls still bring awe and a sense of pride. Our little one was mesmerized with the chambers, corridors, gallery and garden around the area. She also bought little souvenirs for her friends from the shops in the vicinity.
We then stopped to seek blessing at the Masjid-i Jahān-Numā commonly known as Jama Masjid. The marble and red-sandstone ‘Friday Mosque’ was Shah Jahan’s final architectural triumph, built between 1644 and 1658. We bought our tickets at the entrance and then started our climb of 121 steps up the narrow southern minaret . Before entering the mosque, we removed our shoes at the top of the stairs. There was an unusual sense of calmness and serenity in the aura of the mosque.
A visit to Chandni chowk is incomplete without the hot samosas and kachoris along with the famous dahi vada from Nataraj . My little one was vary with the hustle bustle and chaos around the area. She failed to understand the excitement around the area. The narrow lanes and the dwelling of the people around the place did amaze her. We explained to her that this the trade centres of Delhi. Everything one needs can be found around here.
We then visited one of the most magnificent tombs built in Delhi, The Humayun Tomb. Built with red sandstone, in the centre of Charbagh style of garden, this is the first ever garden style tomb. We were spellbound with the octagonal shape and its high central arch. The architecture still brings approbation
Our last pit stop for the day was Lodi Garden. This was a pleasant getaway for the toddler. She was thrilled to see the gardens and played around endlessly. The green grass and open sky does have its own magic. It was fun to simply watch her enjoy herself. Lodi Garden also narrates the history of the Sayyid dynasty .
The day was very enticing for our preschooler. She still wonders how people could live in such big houses, with courtyards; gardens and fountains. What she had heard in her stories had come to life. But the day brought a realization to us as parents too .Our life seems a bit robotic rather mechanical. There is a timetable for every chore of the day and leaving no or little time for our little ones. It is here that play schools serve as a joyful mechanism, supporting us parents in the upbringing of our toddlers. With playschools and day care centre mushrooming in every corner of the city , preschool admission in Delhi and also finding a day care centre seems nothing less than a NASA project!!! We realized that with admission to a playschool and day care centre , children learn to take responsibility for oneself. They are monitored and guided to be independent. Being independent is not just about doing things on your own. Its also the ability to express. Toddlers are encouraged to express their feeling, their discomforts, enabling the team to attend it immediately. It definitely is a boost to their self esteem.
