Vehicle Dashboard Gauges
Total Articles: 3
There are several gauges on the dash of most modern vehicles. Older cars or recent base models may have only basic options including speedometer, fuel gauge, tachometer and pressure gauge. These may be located close together under the dashboard behind the steering wheel. Instrument cluster replacement may be needed if the lighting falters, or if any measurement fails to display. Dash panel failure can also cause issues with the other electronic modules in the vehicle. Issues may be simple annoyance or a source of concern, depending on the problem.
Many of the electronic modules in modern cars are interconnected. It is possible that some flaws may be common in specific models, such as dark displays, odometers displaying incorrect data or gauge freezes. The more advanced the technology, the more places the electronics may fail. Diagnosing the issue is almost as complex as the technology. It possible that only a gas gauge needs to be replaced in one cluster, whereas another with the same symptoms may require programming or a new relay. As each situation can be different, with unique complications, consulting with professional technicians may help diagnose the problem accurately.
Repair vs. Replace
Clusters are programmed with vehicle specific data and coding may still be required if replacing the instrument cluster. Specialized equipment available at certified shops and dealers may be needed for the coding, enabling the replacement part to operate correctly. If the original instrument cluster is repaired, coding may not be necessary.
Odometer replacement means that the mileage display begins at zero. Although this doesn’t cause an operating issue, additional paperwork and documentation may be needed when the vehicle is sold or traded for another. Repairing the odometer does not reset the mileage reading.
Swapping stock parts with replacements machined at the same time may not completely fix the problem, as they can have the same weakness as the factory original. Instrument cluster replacement options may use a rebuilt part with upgraded components that fix the flaws in the initial malfunctioning part.
A repaired or rebuilt instrument cluster may require the expertise of trained professionals. Certification requirements are rigorous, and repair centers that meet IPC industry standards may delve into the technical specifications of each part. Preconfigured or universal replacement clusters and generic repair kits purchased may have hidden problems. However, shops that use rebuilt components meeting each client’s specifications test for performance before shipping.
Companies that provide seat belt, display and instrument cluster replacement, may provide faster turnaround time than a dealership and pricing can be less expensive for the new and upgraded components and focus on specialized service.
