South Africa Cricket appointing Ottis Gibson as the Head Coach is a sign of transformation within the team. South Africa has been always a symbol of persistence in sports and athletics even if it is not a high runner in global politics and economy. Even if the country lacks the infrastructure compared to that of nations like Australia, it has the army of sportsmen that can challenge any counterparts. In cricket as well, the team thrives for the best. However, struggle never seems to end. There is always a player or another in the team positive on the Kolpak route, ending their career with the South Africa team. There are allegations by players against internal politics in CSA, as it is being at their national governance.

The selection of Ottis Gibson as the coach is a sharp turn in the approach of CSA. A stance of nationalism is apparent moving back to a person who played for the same team decades back. Gibson was brought back from England where he was working as the bowling coach to become the head coach of team South Africa. CSA also compensated England Cricket Board for allowing Gibson to end his contract before it ended. This was perhaps due to the increasing pressure on the board to replace the existent coach for a consistently poor performance of the team. Now, the big challenge for CSA is to really transform the team under the leadership of Gibson. ICC World Cup Cricket today is not on priority, but it is bound to become one after only a short while for South Africa. For the coach, it is a big responsibility to prepare the team for the event.

The new coach has started his stint with the home team and he has also outlined the plan of action to transform the team. A close working with skipper Faf du Plessis will offer the new coach to understand the team in a better way. Gibson is quite vocal about the problems and issues in the team. South Africa need to become serious about their forms. The Team’s slog in Test format is apparent and it would need a strong makeover. In bowling front as well, the players have lost their pace, which must be revived under the guidance of coach.

Gibson’s coaching record hit the limelight only after joining the England team as the bowling coach. England transformed itself to a strong and formidable site with players in both batting and bowling fronts. Per Gary Kirsten, foreign coach is always a great idea as it can bring new techniques and ideas to the game. He said, South Africa need a fresh set of ideas that can change the game. Gibson was the right choice to fill the void.
