Mechanical ventilation is a lifesaving intervention for those patients who have respiratory disorders or respiratory failures. It is a form of artificial breathing in which a patient is connected to a ventilator through endotracheal tube directly applied to the airways. It is also used as a diagnostic tool to diagnose to measure the static compliance of airway resistance and irregular functioning of respiratory tract. There are a variety of positive pressure or negative pressure ventilators in healthcare sector but intensive care and portable mechanical ventilator are most widely used.
Increasing incidence of chronic diseases like COPD, bronchitis, asthma and lung disorders can lead to the requirement of mechanical ventilators. Moreover, rising geriatric population has also increased the demand of ventilators. In old age people are prone of diseases which require ventilation for proper breathing and hence ventilators are needed. Sometime medicines used to induce anesthesia can disrupt normal breathing and a ventilators can help the patient to breathe normally during surgery. Ventilators normally don’t cause pain but it can affect patient’s ability to talk or eat. Breathing tubes in airways can also cause discomfort to patient. Ventilators cannot treat a patient’s disease or condition it is used only to support life. If someone is on ventilator for long time it can limit their movement and a regulator chest x ray and blood test need to perform to check the level of oxygen or carbon dioxide in blood.
There are some factors which are restricting the growth of ventilator market. Factors like injuries associated with invasive mechanical ventilation for condition like pneumonia, lung injuries, barotrauma, and high cost of ventilators are restricting the market growth. Non-invasive ventilators are having immense opportunities as these ventilators are designed for critically ill patients suffering from respiratory failure, new born babies who are not breathing properly and congestive cardiac failure. Poor ventilator management can cause serious pulmonary and extra pulmonary damage which can cause affect patient’s health badly. The demand of these ventilators are expected to because it is more convenient, have less side effects and helps patient to recover soon.
