The future of technology lies in data and its analysis. More objects and devices are now connected to the Internet, transmitting the information they gather back for further analysis. The ultimate aim of the technology is to utilize this data to learn about patterns and trends that can be used to make a positive impact on our lifestyle or in business. However, the data itself doesn’t produce this objective, but rather it’s solutions that arise from analyzing it and finding the answers we need.

Two terms that have been discussed in relation to this future are the big data and the Internet of Things (IoT) and it’s hard to talk about one without the other. What's the difference between the Internet of Things and Big Data? That's not really the best question to ask, because these two are much more alike than they are different and they complement each other very strongly which is one reason we've to think about the intersection of these two tremendous technologies.

Big Data Analytics

Big data has existed long before the IoT burst out into the scene to perform analytics. Big data is characterised by '4 ...
... Vs' i.e. information is defined as big data when it demonstrates the 4 V’s: volume, variety, velocity, and veracity. This equates to a massive quantity of data (volume) that can be both structured and unstructured, arrives at (often real-time) speed (velocity) and can be of uncertain provenance (veracity). Such information is unsuitable for processing using traditional SQL query based relational database management systems, which is why alternative tools like Apache's open-source Hadoop distributed data processing system, plus various NoSQL databases and a range of business intelligence platforms has evolved to service this market.

The Internet of Things

IoT is about devices, data and connectivity. The real value of Internet of Things is about creating smarter products, delivering intelligent insights and providing new business outcomes. anything from watches to electronic appliances, cars and bikes. Products that normally wouldn’t be connected to the Internet and able to obtain and process data, are equipped with sensors and chips for data gathering. Later on these chips and sensor based devices are used mostly for gathering data that indicates customer usage patterns and product performance.

The IoT is essentially the means that collects and sends data. Information from IoT devices resides in Big data and is measured against it with the help of ETL Tool implementation. The concept of deriving intelligence from Big Data using artificial Intelligence technologies is the key enabler for smarter devices and a connected world in the present era. The IoT and big data are clearly intimately connected, billions of internet-connected 'things' will generate massive amounts of data.

Bringing The Two Practices Together

IoT requires advanced infrastructures, including sensor based hardware, software applications and operating systems. Enterprises will need to deal with the huge amount of data and analyzing it in real-time becomes a huge challenge as data grows by the minute. That’s where Big data comes into the picture, Many BI and big data analytics tools and services are capable of handling masses of data transmitted from IoT devices that produce a continuous stream of information. The IoT technology delivers the data from which Big data analytics can draw the information to create the insights required of it.

The next generation analytics database leverages GPU technology, allowing an even further downsizing of the hardware and infrastructure. This helps IoT companies correlate the growing number of data sets, which helps them get real-time responses and adapt to changing trends, solving the size challenge without compromising on the performance. The use of Artificial Intelligence technologies like deep learning will be a key differentiator to derive insights rapidly from massive streams of data. With IoT, Big Data analytics would also move at the edge for real-time decision making for instance detecting crop patterns in agriculture plants using drones at remote places, detecting suspicious activities at ATMs or predicting driver behavior for a connected car.

With the expansion of Internet of Things we will also see major cybersecurity issues and safety concerns arise, as cybercriminals could potentially break into the power grid, into traffic systems, and any other connected system that contains sensitive data that can shut down cities. So there will also be a need of IoT devices protection against security breaches with a cloud based solution.

The Internet of Things and Big data share a closely connected future. There is no doubt the two fields will create new opportunities and solutions that will have a long and lasting impact. To sum it up, Big data is all about enabling organizations to use more of the data around them, used by them and generated by their activities. And there's IoT! one way to think of it is as one of the sources for big data. But IoT can be more than that once it operates in conjunction with Big Data.
