The gloss of any apparent surface can be measured by examining the angle of reflection. A known amount of light is thrown on a surface at a fixed angle and the amount of reflection at the same angle is also measured. Different surfaces need different reflective angles for the measurement. In the case of nonmetals, any increase in the illumination angle increases the reflected light while rest of it penetrates the material surface.
In metals, the angle of illumination is smaller and reflection is higher. To be very clear, the amount of incident light is not related to the gloss of a surface. But it is its reflected light that counts for the measurement of the gloss.
Surfaces that have higher refractive index tend to have more than 100 gloss units of measurements. A highly polished surface reflects images more clearly than a less polished surface. A gloss checker has a wide range of applications in the measurement of gloss for different types of surfaces.
