A transformer is made of three windings primary, secondary and tertiary. The working of all these windings depends on the flux produced between them and magnetic cores are the elements that serve the pathway to the flux. A magnetic core is a piece of magnetic material that is used to confine and guide electromagnets, transformers, electric motors, etc. These are made of different materials and to make your understanding clear, here we share some of the common materials that are used for constructing these magnetic cores, have a look below to know more.

Solid Iron: One of the most common materials that is used for constructing the magnetic core is solid iron because it is a good conductor and the eddy current induces by the solid iron core is large. But these are not ideal for AC Applications because of the large eddy current that further produces a lot of heat at high frequency, which damage the appliance drastically.

Silicon Steel: Another common material used for constructing the magnetic core is silicon steel that has high electrical resistivity with the minimum losses. It offers a high saturation flux density ...
... that ensures stable performance, which makes them ideal for the high-performance applications.

Amorphous Steel: These are highly popular in the transformer industry for constructing the amorphous steel, which is glassy or non-crystalline and has low-conductivity to reduce eddy currents.

Carbonyl Iron: These are widely used for constructing the magnetic core as they provide stability in temperature levels, which further helps to reduce the effects of eddy current even if the temperature is high.

Ferrite Ceramics: In all the high-frequency applications the magnetic core made of ferrite ceramics are used as they help to decrease eddy currents and ensures the smooth working of the transformer and appliances connected with it.

These are some of the common materials used for constructing the magnetic cores and each of them has their own pros and cons. You have to be very careful while selecting the right material to secure the functioning of your device. To know which one is perfect for your transformer and ensure smooth working you can take the help of an expert that has great knowledge and serve you the best you deserve. Do remember the right selection of right material is a must to get assured about the flux produced between the windings that further take care of its overall working with no hassle.
