Kitchen Renovation the Fun Way

By: Mark Philmont

Looking for an inexpensive idea to improve the look and value of your kitchen? Look no further than new kitchen cabinets. The cabinet is one of the most noticeable parts of a kitchen. Even if another feature stands out; the kitchen cabinet serves as the backdrop for the room. It might get passed over on the first look, but eventually it is noticed.

How do you improve your kitchen without spending a lot of money? The trick is to buy un-assembled cabinets or as they are called in the business “RTA Products”. RTA is ready to assemble -- for those unfamiliar with the term. These cabinets cost around twenty five to thirty five percent less than assembled cabinets and have a better quality to them. (Of course not counting high end cabinets that cost fifty to seventy five percent more) But remember, in today’s real estate market, cutting a corner and buying RTA cabinets is not only smart, but it will save you money?

At some time or another all of us had to assemble something. Be it a gift you received on Christmas or a piece of “knockdown furniture” that you picked up at the local mega store. Either way it came with instructions and a few parts. The RTA cabinet is similar, but if you find the correct RTA product, you will notice that it is significantly easier to assemble.

How do you find the right RTA product? In some parts of the country there is a store called IKEA. This store is known for selling inexpensive products that look stylish and modern. It can do this because the store sells RTA products. However, these products are not easy to assemble. These items have many parts, confusing directions, and unfamiliar components. It is a good example of something that looks good until you get it out of the box. So where is the best RTA product?

Fortunately, the quality un-assembled kitchen cabinets are found online. Yes the internet provides the fastest and easiest way to buy RTA products. A good kitchen cabinet website will offer you sample doors and will explain the product that they sell. Look to see if the product is of solid wood construction and paneled wood sides. This type makes for the best RTA products. Avoid particle board or laminate. It will eventually fall apart.

Yes you can go to a store like Target, see the product and then take it home and try to assemble it; but there are some pitfalls with that as well. The big one is quality. It looks good in the store, but upon further examination you will find particle board. It is amazing to think that stores are selling this material. One dash of water and it is going to absorb that liquid, expand, and eventually fall apart. So again, avoid the eye appealing display and dig a little deeper. Search online, use a key phrase like RTA kitchen cabinet and you should be successful in finding your next kitchen cabinets.
